On the day of his final match, his first main-roster opponent, Kurt Angle, paid tribute to him. Their story began on SmackDown on June 27, 2002, when a rookie answered Angle’s open challenge with the words “Ruthless Aggression!”
When did John Cena retire?
Cena’s final WWE match took place on December 13, 2025, against Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C. WWE’s current John Cena profile records that he retired from in-ring competition at the end of 2025. That wording matters: the confirmed milestone is his retirement from wrestling in the ring.
The final match was the culmination of a farewell announced earlier. In July 2024, Cena said his final Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber and WrestleMania appearances would come in 2025. CBS News reported that announcement and quoted him saying, “There were many before me, there will be many after. I guess what I have left to do is say my thank yous before that chapter closes.” WWE later announced the date and opponent for his final match.
What did Kurt Angle say about John Cena retiring?
On December 13, 2025—the day of Cena’s final WWE match—Angle posted a tribute. TJR Wrestling reproduced the social-media message, including Angle’s words: “From his unforgettable moments in the ring to his inspiring presence outside of it, John Cena has truly left an indelible mark on the world of sports entertainment. I am proud to have been part of his journey, and what a ride it has been for him. His dedication, resilience, and passion have inspired countless fans and peers alike.”
