Johnny Marr objected in January 2024 after footage from a 2023 South Dakota Donald Trump rally showed the Smiths’ “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” playing before Trump came on stage. Marr said he would shut the use down, but contemporary reports do not establish that he filed suit or that the song stopped being played.
Which Smiths song was played at the rally?
The song heard in the footage was “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want,” co-written by Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr and frontman Morrissey, according to The Guardian’s January 24, 2024 report. It played while the crowd waited for Trump to appear at a rally in South Dakota in 2023.
What did Johnny Marr say?
On January 23, 2024, Marr replied on X to a post sharing the rally footage: “Ahh…right…OK. I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass. Consider this shit shut right down right now.” The Guardian reproduced the post, and Pitchfork’s January 24 report also covered his response.
His comment was a public objection and declaration of intent to stop the use. It is not evidence by itself that legal proceedings began or that the music was no longer used.

Was the Smiths’ music played at other Trump rallies?
The Guardian reported that Smiths music had reportedly been heard at multiple Trump rallies around that time, including a rally in Laconia, New Hampshire, on the Monday before its January 24 article. That is contemporaneous reporting about events around January 2024, not confirmation of later use.
What happened after Marr’s objection?
The contemporary reports do not establish whether Marr took legal action, whether the campaign stopped playing the song, or whether it was used again afterward. The Guardian said it contacted a Marr representative to clarify what he might do; Pitchfork reported that his representatives offered no additional comment when reached. Neither account documents a completed legal action or a definitive end to the song’s use. Rolling Stone UK also reported on the footage and response on January 24, 2024.
