Jon Landau, the producer whose long partnership with director James Cameron helped bring Titanic and the Avatar films to the screen, died in Los Angeles on July 5, 2024. He was 63. His career grew from production management into producing, and he shared the Best Picture Oscar with Cameron for Titanic.
How Jon Landau built his producing career
Landau began working in production management in the 1980s and advanced to producing, according to CBS/AP. His role required turning ambitious productions into finished films. He once described the job with characteristic humor while accepting an award with Cameron: “I can’t act and I can’t compose and I can’t do visual effects. I guess that’s why I’m producing.”
Titanic and the Best Picture Oscar
Landau produced Titanic with Cameron. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, shared by its producers, and CBS/AP reported that it won 11 Oscars overall. Landau’s award-winning work established a creative partnership that continued well beyond the film.
From Avatar to The Way of Water
Landau continued producing with Cameron on Avatar (2009) and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022). Their collaboration was both professional and personal. Cameron described Landau in AP/CBS reporting as his closest collaborator of 31 years; tributes also recalled him as a close friend.

What was reported about Landau’s cause of death?
Initial coverage of the family announcement did not identify a cause. CBS/AP, PBS/AP, ABC News Australia and the Los Angeles Times reported that the family had not provided one. Later obituaries by Variety and The Guardian reported that Landau died of cancer. Those later reports named a cause; they should not be read as a cancer announcement from the family.
