Jon Favreau was reported to be writing and producing a prospective Disney+ series about Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Gizmodo’s March 7, 2025 report, citing Deadline, described it as a blend of live action and photorealistic animation. The announcement points to a broader Disney career that also includes Marvel films and The Lion King—not only Star Wars.
What is Jon Favreau’s new project?
Gizmodo reported that Favreau was attached as writer and producer to a planned Disney+ series centered on Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. The reported format combines live action with photorealistic animation. Because the report described a prospective project, it does not establish that the series has been made or released.

Why Oswald matters to Disney history
Gizmodo’s account says Walt Disney created Oswald in 1927 and that 27 animated shorts featured the character. It says Universal took control of Oswald in 1928, after which Disney created Mickey Mouse as a replacement. These historical details are presented here as Gizmodo reported them; the underlying Deadline article was not available for independent verification.

Oswald’s connection to Mickey makes the character more than a new subject for a streaming project: he represents an earlier chapter in Disney’s animation history. How the prospective series might use that history has not been established.
Favreau’s Disney work extends beyond Star Wars
Favreau is closely associated with The Mandalorian, but the projects cited in Gizmodo’s article also include Marvel films and Disney’s The Lion King. The Oswald report adds another distinct Disney project to that range, with Favreau attached to write and produce rather than only being associated with the franchise as a performer or director.

A recent Oswald short offers another point of context
Gizmodo also noted a vintage-style Oswald short released in 2022 for Disney’s centennial. The article described it, attributing the description to Walt Disney Animation’s YouTube channel, as the first hand-drawn short starring Oswald in nearly 95 years. That characterization is attributed rather than independently checked here; the linked video was not available for verification.
