Jimmy Kimmel’s awkward April Fools’ sonogram prank involved his pregnant cousin Micki—but the person he fooled was her mother, Aunt Chippy. Micki helped stage the gag, which turned a seemingly ordinary scan into a mischievous animated-fetus reveal.
How the sonogram prank was set up
In the 2017 segment, Kimmel and his cousin Sal arranged a fake sonogram appointment at a real sonogram location. Micki, who was pregnant and in on the joke, invited her mother, Aunt Chippy, to come see the baby. A fake technician conducted the exam while Kimmel’s show graphics team supplied the unusual images for the monitor.
Four hidden cameras recorded the room. Kimmel and Sal watched from an adjacent area, while Micki and the technician wore wires and repeated lines fed to them. The setup initially looked like a normal scan.
What Aunt Chippy saw on the screen
The scan’s animated fetus first picked its nose and ate what it had removed. Then it raised a finger toward its future grandmother. Chippy caught the gesture and asked, “Did he do what I thought he did — giving us the finger?”

In his on-air introduction, Kimmel joked that his aunt was “a shot glass full of gasoline.” The line was part of the comedy setup, not a factual description.
Who was in on it—and who was fooled?
- In on the prank: Micki, cousin Sal, the fake technician and the production crew.
- The target: Aunt Chippy, who believed she was attending a sonogram appointment to see her grandchild.
- The reveal: The scan’s animated, prankish fetus was created for the show rather than being an actual ultrasound image.
