Why did John Cena turn heel?
In his first televised explanation after attacking Cody Rhodes, Cena blamed the audience. He argued that fans expected the familiar John Cena persona while taking his time and personal moments for themselves, and casting him as their “puppet.” He framed his choice not as a villain’s confession, but as a response to what he called an abusive relationship.
“For 25 years, I’ve been a victim of an abusive relationship,” Cena said during the promo, as quoted by CBS Sports. The line was part of a scripted wrestling storyline; it should not be read as proof of a real-life grievance or the verified reason behind WWE’s creative decision.
What happened on Raw in Brussels?
Cena opened the March 17, 2025 show to boos and chants from the Brussels crowd. Two weeks earlier, at Elimination Chamber on March 1, he had attacked Rhodes and aligned himself with The Rock; contemporaneous coverage also describes Travis Scott’s involvement in the attack. On Raw, Cena presented his explanation, and Rhodes confronted him later in the segment, rejecting Cena’s new “whiny” persona. Their exchange set up the rivalry heading into WrestleMania 41.

Storyline explanation versus real motivation
The televised story gives Cena a clear grievance: he says fans demanded the old version of him, took what they wanted from him, and made him the butt of an “invisible” joke. The plot mechanics are his betrayal of Rhodes and his alignment with The Rock. These establish what the characters said and did on screen; they do not establish Cena’s real feelings or the full backstage rationale for the turn.
