Moondoggie made Darren a teen idol
Darren’s breakthrough came in the 1959 film Gidget, in which he played Moondoggie opposite Sandra Dee. The role made him a teen idol, and the film became closely associated with the popularization of California surfing culture. It was one contribution to that association, not the sole cause of surfing’s growth.
A career that continued across film and television
Darren’s work extended well beyond the beach-film fame of Gidget. He appeared in the film The Guns of Navarone and the television science-fiction series The Time Tunnel. On T.J. Hooker, he played Officer Jim Corrigan.

Later, Darren found a new audience as Vic Fontaine on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. His career also included television directing, with episodes of series such as Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place.
Darren was also a singer
Alongside acting, Darren pursued a recording career. His song “Goodbye Cruel World” was a hit in 1961, adding pop music to a career that moved between film, television and directing.

Remembering James Darren
In CBS News’s September 3, 2024, coverage, Moret recalled his father simply: “He was always cool.” The line captures the screen presence that first made Darren familiar to audiences, while his decades of work show how far his career reached beyond that early image.
