In an interview with The New York Times, as quoted by the Los Angeles Times on June 14, 2026, Rogen said nothing had changed since his previous comments: “I haven’t worked with him in a really long time and I have no plans to.” The Variety Australia report on the same date quoted him saying, “I haven’t talked to him in a long time, no.”

Rogen declined to lay out the personal details, describing that side of the situation as nuanced and saying he did not want to involve other people in discussing it publicly. His comments establish his current public position, not a complete explanation of how the friendship ended.
Franco’s account
In an October 2024 interview with Variety, Franco said he had not spoken with Rogen and thought the friendship was over. He also said he still loved him and that the silence was “not for lack of trying.” The Independent later quoted Franco saying they had “20 great years together” and that he had told Rogen how much he meant to him. That is Franco’s account of his attempts to reconnect; it has not been independently established in the cited reporting.

How the fallout unfolded
- 1999: Rogen and Franco worked together on the television series Freaks and Geeks. Their professional relationship continued for roughly two decades, including films such as Pineapple Express, This Is the End, The Interview and The Disaster Artist.
- 2018: Five women, including former acting students, publicly alleged sexually inappropriate or exploitative behavior by Franco. Franco initially said allegations he had heard were not accurate, while also saying he supported people speaking out.
- 2019–2021: Two former students pursued a lawsuit alleging misconduct connected with Franco’s acting school and its classes. The case was settled in 2021. The Independent reported the settlement at $2.23 million; the Los Angeles Times described it as about $2.2 million.
- 2021: Rogen said he despised abuse and harassment and would not conceal such conduct. At that time, he said he did not plan to work with Franco. Franco apologized to Rogen for being put in the position of speaking publicly for him. Franco also acknowledged having had sex with students and said it was wrong, while describing those instances as consensual; that statement should not be conflated with every allegation in the lawsuit.

What the lawsuit settlement does—and does not—establish

The amount reported by outlets differs in precision: The Independent gave $2.23 million, while the Los Angeles Times reported about $2.2 million.
Rogen has publicly connected his professional stance to opposition to abuse and harassment. He has not publicly provided a full account of the private reasons for the estrangement, and the reported coverage does not establish all the details of the breakup.

Why the friendship ended
The public timeline places the estrangement after allegations against Franco surfaced and amid public discussion of his conduct. But Rogen has not given a complete public explanation of the personal relationship, and Franco’s remarks describe his own perspective.
