The recap identifies the artwork as Maurizio Cattelan’s America and says the answer was “toilet.” It does not establish the question’s exact wording or the episode’s air date.
What was the golden-toilet question?
A Primetimer recap reports that CNN journalists Jake Tapper and Kaitlan Collins played as a pair and sought Jimmy Kimmel’s help on a question about the Guggenheim’s gold-plated artwork America. According to that recap, they settled on the wrong response before Kimmel supplied “toilet.” The List also describes the question as concerning the Guggenheim installation and identifies the answer as “toilet.” Neither account provides an official transcript, so the precise wording of the question and exchange cannot be confirmed. Primetimer’s recap and The List’s coverage are entertainment reports, not program transcripts.
Who was involved?
The reported moment involved Tapper and Collins as celebrity contestants playing together, with Kimmel hosting. ABC describes Kimmel as the host of the primetime return, presented as a 25th-anniversary celebration. ABC’s show page supplies the program context; the contestant details come from the recap. The sources reviewed do not confirm the episode’s air date.
What was Maurizio Cattelan’s America?
America was a site-specific artwork installed at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2016. Maurizio Cattelan replaced a toilet in one of the museum’s public restrooms with a fully functional replica cast in solid gold. The museum announced the work’s opening on September 16, 2016, in its release, Maurizio Cattelan: “America” Opens at the Guggenheim.

The Guggenheim described the work as engaging with luxury and excess in the art market, while also invoking the American dream of opportunity for all. It connected Cattelan’s piece to Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain and Piero Manzoni’s Artist’s Shit. These are the museum’s interpretations, rather than a single definitive meaning everyone must assign to the work.
The museum’s release captures the unusual relationship between visitor and artwork: “Its participatory nature, in which viewers are invited to make use of the fixture individually and privately, allows for an experience of unprecedented intimacy with an artwork.”

Did Collins mislead Tapper?
“Kaitlan Collins misleads Jake Tapper” is Primetimer’s headline framing. Its recap says Collins persuaded Tapper toward an incorrect response before Kimmel gave the answer, but it does not establish that she intended to mislead him. The headline should therefore be read as the publisher’s characterization of the moment, not as a verified claim about Collins’s motive.
