In “Port Antonio,” J. Cole explains why he withdrew from the Drake–Kendrick Lamar battle: he says continuing could have cost him a friendship and fed an escalating conflict. He also rejects the idea that he is choosing sides and tells Drake that he remains his friend. Those are Cole’s own statements in the song, not independent confirmation of what either artist privately thinks.

What Cole says about backing out

Cole frames his withdrawal as a choice about what the battle might cost. In one lyric, he says, “I wouldn’t have lost a battle, dawg, I woulda lost a bro.” The line presents the risk as personal: to Cole, winning or losing a diss exchange mattered less than damaging a friendship.

He also says, “I pulled the plug because I seen where that was ’bout to go,” describing a conflict he believed was heading somewhere more hostile. In the same verse, he suggests the spectacle could make money and attract attention. That is Cole’s interpretation of the situation; the lyric does not establish the other artists’ motives.

Another line captures his sense of being caught between friends: “My friends went to war, I walked away with all they blood on me.” Cole acknowledges the intensity of the feud while describing the emotional weight of stepping out of it.

Why Cole had a part in the feud before withdrawing

The conflict followed the “big three” framing around Cole, Drake and Kendrick Lamar, which drew renewed attention after Cole appeared on Drake’s “First Person Shooter.” Lamar challenged that framing on “Like That.” Cole responded with “7 Minute Drill,” a diss aimed at Lamar, then apologized publicly within days. The Independent reports that Cole removed “7 Minute Drill” from streaming services as he stepped back from the feud: The Independent’s account of Cole’s apology and withdrawal.

“Port Antonio” arrived later as Cole’s account of why he chose not to continue. Pitchfork describes it as a justification for withdrawing, while HipHopDX reports the lyrics in which he explains that decision: Pitchfork’s coverage of “Port Antonio” and HipHopDX’s lyric reporting.

What he says about Drake and choosing sides

Cole pushes back against being cast as taking one side in the feud. He addresses Drake directly in the song: “Aye, Drake, you’ll always be my n**** / I ain’t ashamed to say you did a lot for me, my n****.” He then urges a return to music and writing, saying, “It’s not for beefing, it’s for speaking our thoughts.”

These lyrics make Cole’s stated position clear: he does not want the conflict to define his relationship with Drake or the purpose of rap. They do not establish how Drake or Lamar privately interpreted the song.
