John Oliver’s 2015 Last Week Tonight segment about Canada’s federal election paired two very different Justin Trudeau clips: a reported party trick that ended with him tumbling down stairs, and Bhangra footage from a 2012 event. The dance was not a celebration of Trudeau’s election victory. The episode aired on October 18, 2015, the day before Canadians voted.
What happened in the staircase clip?
In its October 20, 2015 account of Oliver’s segment, Scroll.in reported that Trudeau tried a party trick: pretending to fall down a staircase. The attempt went wrong, and he lost control and rolled down the stairs. The clip served as comic material in a segment about the election campaign; it does not establish that Trudeau enjoyed being hurt or that the fall was anything other than the failed trick Scroll described.

The available account does not independently establish the circumstances in which the footage was recorded. It is safest to describe it as the clip Scroll reported Oliver used, rather than infer more about the event or Trudeau’s reaction.
Was the Bhangra a victory celebration?
No. Scroll identified the Bhangra footage as coming from a 2012 event in Canada marking India’s 66th Independence Day. It predated the 2015 federal election by three years, so it was not footage of Trudeau celebrating a win.

The two clips therefore have different contexts: the stair incident was presented as a party trick, while the Bhangra was earlier event footage. Oliver’s segment brought them into the same election-themed comedy piece, but that does not make them moments from the same occasion.
Which episode was it, and when did it air?
Apple TV’s Canadian catalogue lists the episode as 2015 Canadian Federal Election, Season 2, Episode 31, released October 18, 2015, with a runtime of 29 minutes. That date was one day before the October 19 vote. Scroll’s contemporaneous report likewise describes the episode as airing before the result was declared, which is why its discussion treats the outcome as unresolved.

What was happening in Canada’s election?
Canada’s 42nd general election took place on October 19, 2015, after a 78-day election period. Elections Canada’s official report records 184 Liberal seats, 99 Conservative seats and 44 New Democratic Party seats. Justin Trudeau led the Liberals; the result made him prime minister, but Oliver’s episode was broadcast before voters went to the polls.

Elections Canada publications report turnout in two different ways: the narrative in the official election report gives 68.0%, while the agency’s standardized turnout series lists 68.3% for October 19, 2015. Those figures should not be combined or treated as interchangeable without specifying the publication and measure.

Scroll characterized Oliver as calling the 78-day campaign “adorable.” That is Scroll’s description of his framing, not a verified full-sentence quotation. The segment’s subject was the campaign as it unfolded before election day, rather than an analysis of the eventual parliamentary result.
