Italian YouTuber Francesco Salicini, known as Once Were Nerd, said authorities searched a family home on April 15, 2025, and seized more than 30 consoles and his phone. News reports linked the investigation to allegations involving handheld consoles supplied with game files and whether his videos promoted copyrighted games. The reports establish neither a conviction nor a prison sentence.
What happened in the reported police search?
PC Gamer reported on July 17, 2025, that Salicini said the search began at his mother’s home on April 15. According to his account as reported by the outlet, he cooperated with authorities and they took more than 30 consoles and his phone. Salicini reportedly believed the inquiry concerned consoles supplied with microSD cards containing games. These details are attributed to Salicini’s account; the report does not independently confirm every aspect of the search or seizure. PC Gamer’s report.
Why were the handhelds reportedly seized?
Contemporaneous coverage connected the investigation to allegations about preloaded game files and whether Salicini’s videos promoted or circulated copyrighted games. That is different from an established finding that he committed an offense, or that authorities acted simply because he reviewed retro gaming hardware.
Reports identified Anbernic devices and mentioned Powkiddy and TrimUI among makers associated with the handhelds Salicini covered. They do not provide a complete, independently verified list of seized models, and they do not establish that every device made by these companies contains unauthorized games. Is Salicini actually facing a prison sentence?

No such conclusion follows from the reported allegations or the statute. La Repubblica made that distinction in its July 21, 2025 coverage and noted that most ROMs distributed online remain protected by copyright; that is the newspaper’s characterization, not a ruling in Salicini’s case. la Repubblica.
