“Radio silence” was an unnamed insider’s description of limited communication about Catherine, Princess of Wales—not a Kensington Palace statement about her health. In March 2024, the Palace had said she underwent planned abdominal surgery and would receive updates only when significant new information was available. The account explains what was said publicly at the time; it does not establish her medical status today.
What the “radio silence” report said
People’s March 6, 2024, story quoted a “Palace insider” describing complete “radio silence” about the Princess’s condition, according to Nieman Lab’s March 7 timeline of royal press coverage. The phrase reflected that source’s characterization of limited communication. It was not an official Palace announcement, a medical assessment, or a diagnosis.
Nieman Lab also distinguished that account from a separate comment People attributed to Prince William’s spokesperson: the spokesperson said William’s focus was on work and not social media. The two remarks came from different sources and should not be treated as one explanation for the limited updates. Nieman Lab’s March 2024 timeline places them in the context of the coverage at the time.
What Kensington Palace had said about surgery and privacy
In a statement summarized by Harper’s Bazaar, Kensington Palace said the Princess had undergone planned abdominal surgery in January 2024. The statement, as summarized there, did not give the specific reason for the surgery. It is not a basis for inferring a diagnosis or further medical details. Harper’s Bazaar’s March 10, 2024 report recounts the Palace’s statement and the contemporaneous discussion of updates.

The Palace said it would share information about her progress only when there was significant new information: “Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness’ progress when there is significant new information to share.” It also said the Princess hoped people would understand her wish to maintain normality for her children and keep her personal medical information private. Those were the Palace’s stated reasons for limiting what it shared; the public statement did not disclose additional medical facts.
Why the lack of updates drew attention
When information is limited, public discussion can fill the gap—but speculation is not evidence. In a March 18, 2024 CNN transcript, royal historian Kate Williams said the lack of communication had left a vacuum for speculation. That was Williams’s analysis of the coverage, not confirmation of rumors or new information about the Princess’s health. CNN’s March 18 transcript records her comments.

The March 2024 reporting documents an insider’s description of the communication gap, the Palace’s stated approach to updates, and contemporaneous commentary about public speculation. These sources do not establish Catherine’s current medical status or provide a later health update. The “radio silence” phrase should therefore be read as a description attributed to an unnamed source at that time, not as a present-day medical report.
