The reported tear was linked to Prince Harry’s best-man speech at the Buckingham Palace reception after Prince William and Catherine Middleton’s wedding on April 29, 2011. Biographer Katie Nicholl’s account says Harry described the couple’s decade-long romance as his inspiration and that Kate shed a tear. It does not establish that he addressed a particular line directly to her.
What Harry reportedly said at the reception
Harry gave a best-man speech at the Buckingham Palace reception. Marie Claire UK, reporting on Katie Nicholl’s 2017 biography Harry: Life, Loss, and Love, described the speech as affectionate, warm, and funny. Nicholl’s account, as reproduced by the magazine, says the couple’s decade-long romance was Harry’s inspiration and that Kate shed a tear. The report does not identify a specific sentence that Harry directed to Kate.
Marie Claire UK also reproduces this line from the speech, attributing it to Harry through Nicholl’s account: “William didn’t have a romantic bone in his body before he met Kate, so I knew it was serious when William suddenly started cooing down the phone at Kate.” The quotation is reported by the magazine from the biography; it is not presented here as verified against a speech transcript or recording.
Why accounts of the wedding day can get mixed up
A separate reported exchange took place at Westminster Abbey, before the ceremony. The Independent says Marcia Moody’s 2013 biography Kate: A Biography recounts that Harry looked back as Kate began walking down the aisle, told William she had arrived, and said: “Well, she looks beautiful, I can tell you that.” In that account, Harry was speaking to William—not delivering the later reception speech to Kate.

|---|---|---|---|
| Aisle | Westminster Abbey, as Kate walked toward the ceremony | Harry reportedly told William that Kate looked beautiful. | Marcia Moody’s Kate: A Biography (2013), as reported by The Independent (2021). |
| Reception | Buckingham Palace, at the post-wedding reception | Harry’s best-man speech reportedly drew on the couple’s decade-long romance; Nicholl’s account says Kate shed a tear. | Katie Nicholl’s Harry: Life, Loss, and Love (2017), as reported by Marie Claire UK (2021). |
What the reporting establishes—and what it doesn’t
The tear anecdote is attributed to Nicholl’s biography in Marie Claire UK. Marie Claire US also reports Nicholl’s account, so its coverage is not independent eyewitness corroboration. The cited reports do not establish Kate’s own explanation of the moment, nor do they confirm the anecdote against a recording, an official transcript, or direct access to the book’s text.
For that reason, the careful answer to “What did Harry say to Kate?” is that the reported tear followed a speech celebrating her and William’s long relationship; the available account does not show that Harry said a particular line directly to her. The aisle compliment is a distinct anecdote, reported as something he said to William earlier that day.
