The tradition was reportedly blooding, a hunting rite in which blood from a child’s first animal kill is smeared on the child’s face. Fox News reported in February 2025 that royal author Tom Quinn said Catherine, Princess of Wales, had insisted her children would not take part. The report does not include confirmation from Catherine or Kensington Palace.
What is blooding?
In the account reported by Fox News, blooding is a rite associated with fox or stag hunting: after a child’s first kill, blood from the animal is put on the child’s face. The practice is described in the context of a child participating in a hunt; the report does not establish how often it occurs or whether it is a formal requirement of royal life.
What did Kate Middleton reportedly say no to?
Fox News reported on February 27, 2025, that royal author Tom Quinn’s book Yes Ma’am – The Secret Life of Royal Servants claimed Catherine had ruled out blooding for her children. Quinn’s reported wording was: “Catherine, Princess of Wales, has put her foot down and insisted there will be no blooding for her children.” That is Quinn’s claim as relayed in the report, not a direct statement from Catherine. Fox News’s report says it contacted Kensington Palace for comment, but it contains no palace response or confirmation.
What is confirmed—and what is not?
The available reporting establishes that Quinn was cited as the source of the claim and that Fox News sought comment from Kensington Palace. It does not independently verify that Catherine made this decision, that her children have been asked to participate, or that a royal household policy has changed.

Fox’s article also includes commentary from broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard, who criticized the rite, and refers to Prince Harry’s recollection of his own experience in his memoir Spare. Those are attributed opinions and personal context; neither confirms what Catherine decided for her children.

No. The “put her foot down” wording matches the blooding report. Separate stories concern Kate reportedly declining Queen Elizabeth II’s invitation to Christmas lunch at Sandringham in 2006, before her engagement, and reportedly omitting “obey” from her 2011 wedding vows. Those are different events, not the tradition at issue here.
