Her main message to Rudolph’s version of Harris was simple: “And I’m just here to remind you, you got this.” The brief exchange mixed encouragement, campaign wordplay and a joke about Donald Trump’s garbage-truck photo-op.
What Kamala Harris said to Maya Rudolph
The cold open began with Rudolph, who regularly portrayed Harris on the show, speaking to her reflection. The real Harris then appeared as the mirror image. She greeted Rudolph’s character with, “It is nice to see you Kamala,” before offering the pep talk: “And I’m just here to remind you, you got this.” The Associated Press reported the exchange.
The two Harris figures leaned into the mirror premise, speaking in sync about their “belief in the promise of America.” They also delivered the pun, “Keep Kamala and carry-on-ala,” and ended with the show’s familiar sign-off: “Live from New York it’s Saturday night!” The sketch also played with “dramala,” keeping calm and carrying on, and whether Rudolph’s Harris was registered to vote in Pennsylvania, according to the Los Angeles Times.
What the “open doors” joke meant
Harris told Rudolph’s character that she could “do something your opponent cannot do,” then added, “You can open doors.” Rudolph replied, “I can see what you did there. Like to a garbage truck, right?” CBS News, citing the Associated Press, connected the joke to Trump’s appearance in a garbage truck in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

That photo-op had followed President Joe Biden’s remark that appeared to call Trump supporters “garbage.” The SNL line was a topical reference to the campaign moment, not a policy statement.
Why the appearance was a surprise
Harris made the unannounced New York stop while campaigning in battleground states. The Associated Press reported that her team confirmed the appearance only moments before the live broadcast began. She arrived at 30 Rockefeller Plaza shortly after 8 p.m.; the episode aired at 11:30 p.m. Eastern on November 2, the final episode before Election Day. CBS/AP reported that a planned trip to Detroit changed after her plane was already in the air.

The scene’s central message was a short encouragement to her comic counterpart, surrounded by campaign puns and a timely political joke. It was not a policy address. Contemporary coverage described the appearance as a bid for attention and buzz; it does not establish that the cameo changed votes or affected the election result.
