It offers curated, individual film rentals inside the Letterboxd experience—not a subscription catalogue. You need a Letterboxd account to rent, and the price and availability depend on the film and your location.
What is the Letterboxd Video Store?
It is Letterboxd’s digital rental service, where viewers pay to watch films one title at a time. Letterboxd describes it as a curated store rather than an all-you-can-watch subscription. Its launch announcement described an ambition to surface films such as festival titles without distribution, hard-to-find watchlist discoveries, restorations and limited-time previews. Those are launch-era aims, not a guarantee that every category—or any particular film—is available now.

The service has since launched. Its current catalogue list is the place to check what can be rented; films may be limited-time offerings and regional availability varies.
How long do you have to watch a rental?
For most rentals, you have 30 days to start watching. After playback begins, you have 48 hours to finish, and you can watch again during that period. Some limited-time films have shorter viewing windows, so check the terms shown for the specific title before paying. Letterboxd sets out the standard window in its rental help page.

Are rentals available in your country, and what do they cost?
Availability and price are title- and territory-specific. Film rights and tax considerations affect where titles can be rented, and the catalogue can change. Letterboxd’s country availability information and catalogue list explain that regional access varies. Check the film’s live listing in your location rather than assuming it is rentable everywhere.
The price is displayed before payment and varies by title and country; it may change. Letterboxd says new and unreleased films are priced in line with the premium tier of standard digital rentals in each country, while lower-priced titles appear on its Lost and Found shelf. A portion of each rental goes to participating filmmakers. The pricing FAQ, updated September 30, 2026, gives the current pricing explanation, but the checkout listing is the relevant price for a particular rental.

What do you need to rent and watch?
You need to sign in to a Letterboxd account. Letterboxd says Vimeo powers playback. Rentals also require an internet connection and a suitable device and software. Playback quality can vary with bandwidth, network speed, device capability and digital-rights restrictions; consult Letterboxd’s Video Store terms and current device support information for compatibility rather than assuming a device is supported.
Can you gift a rental?
Yes. Rentals can be gifted from a film’s page on the Letterboxd website, and a gift can be scheduled. The recipient needs a Letterboxd account. The advertised rental window begins when the recipient redeems the gift, according to Letterboxd’s gift rental help page.

How to decide whether to rent a film there
Before checking out, compare the exact title’s listing with other legitimate ways to watch it. Focus on whether it is available in your region, the total rental price, how long you have to start and finish, and whether your device and connection meet playback requirements. Letterboxd’s catalogue and prices change, and its published information does not establish one universal price or a comprehensive device list.
