Levi McConaughey says the pressure of being Matthew McConaughey’s son is beginning as he steps into acting. In a PEOPLE interview republished by AOL on September 24, 2025, Levi described the family access that helped him audition for The Lost Bus—and why he sees getting an opportunity as separate from doing the work.
What Levi said about the pressure
Asked whether he felt pressure because of his father’s fame, Levi answered: “Yeah, it’s just starting,” according to the PEOPLE interview republished by AOL.

He acknowledged that having well-known parents can open doors, but said the responsibility after that belongs to him: “And as much as people can say, ‘Oh, you got this because of your father or your mother,’ they can open the door, but then it’s going to be up to me to do my thing once I get in there. That’s on me.”
Why he auditioned for The Lost Bus
Levi said the role was not a declaration that he planned to make acting his career. “This role wasn’t me going ‘Oh, I’m going to become an actor,’ ” he said. “It was me saying, ‘I’m really interested in this.’ ”

The survival thriller is about the 2018 Camp Fire. Matthew plays a bus driver trying to save schoolchildren, America Ferrera plays a teacher, and Levi portrays Matthew’s on-screen son. The interview, published during the film’s publicity campaign, said it began streaming on Apple TV+ on October 3, 2025; that date has passed, so it does not establish current availability.
What the interview reported about his audition
The interview recounts Matthew’s account that he asked for Levi’s surname to be removed from the audition tape. It also reports that director Paul Greengrass chose Levi before being told he was Matthew’s son. This is the interview’s account of the casting sequence, not independently corroborated evidence that establishes how the role was decided.

Matthew’s advice about identity
Matthew described the emotional challenge of navigating the advantages and expectations that come with a famous family: “There’s a line between entitlement and shame. If you can look it right in the eye and deal with it, and if it works out, you’ll see, it’s a hell of a roller coaster.”
He also urged his son to build an identity beyond acting: “It’s important that he has his own ownership of who he is and becomes. And [acting] will be a part of that if he continues to do it, part of finding his identity. But it can’t be his full identity.”
College was still an option in the 2025 interview
Levi said he was open to college and valued the idea of experiencing it. Those comments reflect what he said in September 2025; the interview does not establish whether his plans have since changed.
