More than 150 Jewish Hollywood professionals signed an open letter supporting Jonathan Glazer’s 2024 Oscars speech, according to The Guardian’s April 5, 2024 report. Joaquin Phoenix, Joel Coen and Ilana Glazer were among the named signatories. The signers included actors, but also filmmakers, writers and other creative professionals.
What the supporting letter said
The signatories said they were “alarmed to see some of our colleagues in the industry mischaracterize and denounce his remarks.” They called attacks on Glazer a “dangerous distraction” and warned they could have a “silencing effect,” The Guardian reported.

What Jonathan Glazer said at the 2024 Oscars
On March 10, 2024, Glazer accepted the Academy Award for best international feature for The Zone of Interest. The film depicts the everyday life of a Nazi family living next to Auschwitz; the Associated Press reported that Glazer loosely adapted it from Martin Amis’s novel of the same name.
In his speech, Glazer connected the film’s warning about dehumanization to victims in Israel and Gaza. “Our film shows where dehumanization leads, at its worst,” he said, according to the Associated Press.
Rank #2
The Guardian also quoted Auschwitz Memorial director Piotr Cywiński describing the speech as “a universal moral warning against dehumanization.” Cywiński said critics expecting a clear political stance or a film solely about genocide “did not grasp the depth of his message.”
