What Jennifer and Christopher Candy said
CHCH reported on March 5, 2024, that tributes to Candy were appearing online, including messages from his children. Search-indexed coverage attributed a note to Jennifer reading, “30 years ago today…it feels like a lifetime with and without you.” The same coverage reported that Christopher wrote, “All my love to my dad today.” The original social posts were not independently verified in the reporting available here, so these brief messages are best understood as wording attributed to the siblings by those reports.
When John Candy died
The Canadian actor and comedian died on March 4, 1994, aged 43, after cardiac arrest. He was filming Wagons East in Durango, Mexico, according to Global News’ 2019 anniversary report.
How his children described his lasting appeal
In a 2019 Global News interview, Jennifer spoke about her father’s work reaching new audiences: “It’s something that can go from generation to generation to generation, so I don’t see that slowing down any time soon, just because of everyone who loved him and the work that he created was timeless.”

Christopher described the ongoing interest in his father’s life and work, saying, “He’s still very loved.” The siblings’ reflections help explain why Candy’s films continue to bring new viewers to his performances, decades after his death.

The March 2024 anniversary tributes came before John Candy: I Like Me, a family-involved documentary directed by Colin Hanks and produced by Ryan Reynolds. The project’s official site described a film drawing on interviews with relatives and people from Candy’s life, as well as family and public archival footage. Jennifer and Christopher were involved.
The documentary opened the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival and premiered on Prime Video on October 10, 2025, according to the Associated Press. Availability may vary by region and date. In 2025 coverage of the film, Christopher spoke about grief and what his father had left the family: “He left, but he did leave us some tools to get through this,” including the example that it is okay to talk to someone when feelings become heavy.
