Joseph Gordon-Levitt says he and Tasha McCauley keep their children out of public view so the children can decide for themselves, when they are older, whether they want attention. He has also described keeping a boundary between work and family life as important to his own sanity and his family’s mental health.

Gordon-Levitt wants his children to choose for themselves

Gordon-Levitt has explained that appearing in public because of a parent’s fame should not become an expectation a child has to carry. In an ABC News interview in 2015, he said he did not want his son to feel pressure because his father had spoken about him on television: “I don’t want him to feel the pressure of me having been on TV and saying that.” ABC News reported his explanation as part of a conversation about his discomfort with fame and his limited comments about his son.

In 2017, Gordon-Levitt put the principle directly in terms of a child’s future choice: “My son, he’s just a baby, you know? He hasn’t made the choice to be in the public eye, and that’s a choice that I would like him to be able to make when he’s older.” UPI quoted him while reporting that the couple were expecting a second child. His reasoning is not that he can know what his children will want; it is that their decision should remain theirs to make.

He has described privacy as a family boundary

In a 2020 interview with The Guardian, Gordon-Levitt said: “For my sanity and the mental health of my family, I like to keep a real boundary between my personal life and my professional life.” He also said McCauley dislikes attention. The Guardian interview connects that boundary to how he manages his public work, rather than offering a detailed account of the family’s private life.

Their private wedding reflected the same preference

Gordon-Levitt and McCauley married in a private ceremony at home in December 2014. He said they told few people and rejected the idea that being an entertainer makes a private life public property: “As much as some people may disagree, I don’t believe a person’s private life — even a person in entertainment — is a public performance.” Entertainment Tonight quoted him about the wedding; the Los Angeles Times also reported the private marriage at the time.

What is publicly established about their children

ABC News reported in 2015 that the couple’s first child, a son, had been born. That report establishes the birth of their first child at that time, not a reliable current count of their children. Public information cited here does not establish more, and Gordon-Levitt’s stated preference is to leave identifying details and the children’s future choices private.
