At the 28th Rosalynn Carter Georgia Mental Health Forum on May 14, 2024, Jason Carter, chair of the Carter Center Board of Trustees, spoke about his grandparents and his grandfather’s condition. Georgia Public Broadcasting reported that he described Jimmy Carter as doing OK and said he believed his grandfather was nearing the end of an important faith journey.

Jason Carter explained that, in his view, there was a part of that journey “that you only can live at the very end.” He also recalled watching a Braves game with his grandfather. When Jason asked him about the experience, Jimmy Carter replied, “Well, I don’t know myself.” Georgia Public Broadcasting’s May 14, 2024 report covers the remarks.
What “still there” meant—and what it did not mean
Jason Carter was talking about his grandfather’s presence and faith as he approached the end of his life. His comments conveyed uncertainty: he described what he believed his grandfather was experiencing, while also recounting Jimmy Carter’s own admission that he did not know. They were not a clinical assessment, a prediction of how long Carter would live, or a statement about a specific diagnosis.

The Carter Center’s hospice announcement did not identify a diagnosis. It said Carter had chosen hospice care at home rather than additional medical intervention after a series of short hospital stays. The Carter Center announced that decision on February 18, 2023.
When Jimmy Carter entered hospice care
In February 2023, after a series of short hospital stays, Carter decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention. The Carter Center said his family and medical team supported the decision. He remained in hospice care through the period covered by Jason Carter’s May 2024 remarks.

Carter turned 99 on October 1, 2023. He made a public appearance at the funeral of his wife, Rosalynn Carter, on November 29, 2023. By February 2024, the Carter Center said he had spent a year in hospice care. Voice of America’s retrospective records those milestones.

Jimmy Carter died on December 29, 2024, at home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family. He was 100. The Carter Center described him as the longest-lived president in U.S. history. The Center announced his death that day.

So, the answer to whether Jimmy Carter is still alive is no. Jason Carter’s “still there” and “coming to the end” remarks belong to May 2024, when his grandfather was 99 and in hospice care; they should not be read as a present-day update.
