The Clayface movie seemed to go from news to greenlight in a matter of days because the public announcement came after the project had already been developing. James Gunn said DC had not planned a Clayface film until Mike Flanagan pitched one; Flanagan then wrote two drafts, and Gunn said the stronger second draft convinced the studio to move forward.
Why did the Clayface movie seem to happen so quickly?
The public timeline was not the development timeline. In an interview published December 20, 2024, Gunn recalled that news broke on a Wednesday that Flanagan had written the movie, followed later that week by news of a greenlight and release-date plans. But Gunn said the project had already been in process for some time. The announcements arriving close together did not mean the pitch, writing and decision all happened in a few days. What persuaded DC to make it?
Flanagan brought DC an idea it had not planned
Gunn said DC had no plan to make a Clayface movie before Flanagan pitched his idea. “I didn’t plan on making a Clayface movie,” he told io9. The pitch created the opportunity rather than filling a pre-announced place on a DCU slate.
The script drafts changed the decision
Flanagan wrote the screenplay after the pitch. Gunn described the first draft as great and the second as better: “First draft is great. Second draft is even better.” He said the material was strong enough that the studio decided to proceed and find a place for the project. A separate press interview report published February 24, 2025, corroborated that Flanagan’s pitch initiated the project and that the script impressed the studio. TheWrap’s report

Which Batman world is Clayface part of?
At a February 2025 press event, Gunn said Clayface was “totally DCU.” Peter Safran described it as an origin story for a classic Batman villain. Gunn distinguished that setting from Matt Reeves’ grounded Batman world, whose characters are not presented as super-powered metahumans. The Nerds of Color’s interview report
What kind of Clayface movie did DC describe?
In an August 11, 2025 guide, DC described the film as a horror movie set in the DC Universe, with body-horror influences. That guide named James Watkins as director and Hossein Amini and Mike Flanagan as writers. Those are details as presented in that dated guide, not a guarantee of later production or schedule status.
