The short is Power/Rangers, a dark, unauthorized reimagining of the Power Rangers franchise. James Van Der Beek plays Rocky, a former Red Ranger, and co-wrote the film; Katee Sackhoff plays Kimberly, the Pink Ranger. Sackhoff’s connection to Star Wars is her portrayal of Bo-Katan Kryze in The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
What is Power/Rangers?
Power/Rangers is a 2015 unofficial short-film reimagining that takes the colorful children’s franchise into a violent, adult-oriented setting. It is not an official installment of the franchise. Contemporary coverage described it as unauthorized, and the Guardian reported a dispute with rights holder Haim Saban; that reporting describes the conflict at the time, not a legal conclusion or the project’s present licensing status. CBS News and The Guardian covered the release and dispute.
Who does James Van Der Beek play?
Van Der Beek plays Rocky, the former Red Ranger. He did not play a Ranger in the main Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television series: Rocky is his role in this separate, unofficial short. Van Der Beek also co-wrote the film with Joseph Kahn and Dutch Southern. Kahn directed it, and Adi Shankar produced it. BGR’s coverage identifies the cast and creative team.
Why is Katee Sackhoff connected to Star Wars?
Sackhoff plays Kimberly, the Pink Ranger. Her Star Wars connection is her role as Bo-Katan Kryze in The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. “Star Wars legend” is a promotional description rather than a formal industry title; her specific character credits make the connection clear. BGR discusses those roles alongside the short.

How long is the short, and where was it released?
TIME reported a 14-minute runtime in 2015. That is a contemporary reported length, not a verified runtime for any current viewing platform. Van Der Beek recalled that the team worked without pay and released the short online: “We put a bunch of work into it and we all worked for free, and we gave it away to anyone who wanted to watch it on YouTube and Vimeo.” His account describes the original release, not confirmed present-day availability. TIME’s 2015 report gives the runtime, while Van Der Beek’s TIME interview recounts the release.
What was the creative idea behind it?
Van Der Beek recalled that producer Adi Shankar proposed the concept with the line, “I want to do a hard-R version of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.” The quote is Van Der Beek’s recollection of Shankar’s pitch. The result’s mature, violent tone sharply departs from the family-friendly television series, while using its familiar characters in a standalone fan production.
