Ken Follett’s 2025 historical novel Circle of Days imagines how Stonehenge might have been built. Its central characters are Seft, a flint miner, and Joia, a priestess whose vision inspires a stone circle. That is the novel’s fictional premise—not an archaeological account of how the real monument was made.
What is Ken Follett’s Stonehenge novel about?
Circle of Days is a historical-fiction novel centered on the imagined building of Stonehenge. In the official synopsis, Seft is a flint miner and Joia is a priestess whose vision inspires a monumental project. The story brings divided communities into the effort to create a stone circle.
Follett has described the questions behind the story this way: “Stonehenge is one of the world’s most iconic and recognizable monuments but, in reality, so little is known about it. How was it built? Why was it built? Who built it?” The Associated Press reported the statement as part of its coverage of the novel.
Does the novel explain how Stonehenge was really built?
No. Circle of Days is fiction, so its characters, conflicts and construction narrative are imagined. It can make the monument’s mysteries vivid as a story, but it should not be used as evidence for the real builders, purpose or construction methods.
#1 Best Overall
The sources documenting Follett’s comments and the book do not establish a definitive archaeological answer to those questions. Readers looking for historical explanation should treat the novel and an archaeological account as different kinds of books: one offers an immersive imagined narrative; the other should ground its account in evidence.

In an announcement dated March 11, 2026, Hachette said the novel had been published in 21 languages. That is a publisher-reported figure about the book’s publication, not a claim about Stonehenge.

If your main interest is what is known about Stonehenge rather than an imagined origin story, English Heritage lists Susan Greaney’s Stonehenge as scheduled for November 17, 2026. The listing establishes the title, publisher attribution and scheduled date; it does not provide enough detail for a substantive comparison of the book’s contents with Follett’s novel.
