The interview aired during the week of the Gates Foundation’s Goalkeepers event in New York.
Why Colbert opened with a hot dog
Before the interview, Gates posted an Instagram video of himself ordering and eating a New York street-cart hot dog. His caption read, “Did you even go to New York if you didn’t have a hot dog”. Colbert used the clip to tease him: “You need some money? Why you eatin’ a hot dog on the street?”
Colbert asked whether Gates put ketchup on the hot dog. Gates said he used “a lot.” Colbert, who identified himself as a mustard lover, wrapped up the exchange with, “I’m afraid that’s all we have time for, Bill.” The quotations are reported by GeekWire, not presented here as a verified full transcript.
From the joke to childhood nutrition
The conversation turned to Goalkeepers and the Gates Foundation’s focus on childhood malnutrition and mortality. According to GeekWire’s account, Gates and Colbert sampled vitamin-enriched bouillon cubes. Gates described them as a way to help families in impoverished nations add nutrition to children’s diets, calling the product “kind of magical.” Colbert joked, “Mmm, niacin,” then said, “That is salty. I’d like to rub that on a Dorito.”

What Gates said about AI
In discussing artificial intelligence, Gates said he was “somewhat” concerned and described AI as “the first technology that has no limit.” That was his characterization during the interview, not a settled technical finding or a complete account of his views.
He also pointed to potential benefits, including tutoring for children in underserved urban communities and advances in health care. The discussion mentioned OpenAI’s ChatGPT as an example of how quickly AI systems are learning. The contrast in Gates’s remarks was between a technology he sees as potentially open-ended and applications that could help address practical needs.
