A chance conversation with Katy Perry helped Australian artist Steven Gill see a future for the wildlife photographs he staged in handmade LEGO environments. Gill recalled that Perry urged him to share the work online; he said he created the Gone Buggo name and Instagram account that night. The encounter was reported as taking place during Perry’s 2022 visit to Far North Queensland, and PerthNow published Gill’s account on 27 September 2024.
How Steven Gill met Katy Perry
According to Gill’s recollections in a PerthNow profile, he was working at a hotel in Far North Queensland when he met Perry during her 2022 visit with her daughter, Daisy, and husband, Orlando Bloom. Bloom was in the area filming Wizards! with Pete Davidson.
Gill said he did not recognize Perry at first. He complimented a mushroom tag on her bag, then learned she was interested in LEGO. He asked whether her daughter played with it. Perry reportedly told him Daisy used larger DUPLO blocks and that the family displayed its LEGO collection at home.
Gill then showed Perry photographs of three years’ worth of his work. He recalled that she looked through the album and shared it with people travelling with her. What Gone Buggo makes
Gill’s work brings wildlife photography together with miniature scene-building. He places real animals in LEGO-built dioramas designed to resemble their natural habitats, then photographs them in those settings. The PerthNow feature names scorpions, crabs and funnelweb spiders among the subjects.
The animals are not simply LEGO models: the distinctive idea is to photograph real wildlife against carefully constructed environments. The profile says Gill takes care not to harm the animals while making the images. It does not establish that he uses DUPLO in his own builds; DUPLO appears in the story only as the larger blocks Perry said her daughter played with.

Why Perry’s advice mattered to Gill
Gill recalled that Perry encouraged him to put his work on social media, choose a name that evoked LEGO without infringing its trademarks, create a logo and protect his work. He said she told him, “You need to get on social media, I want to follow you.”
As Perry was checking out of the hotel, Gill recalled, she told him: “You have something amazing, and you need to do something with this. There is more to life than digging trenches. Get out of here and go and do something.” PerthNow presented these as Gill’s recollections of their conversation.

How Gone Buggo began
Gill said he created the Gone Buggo identity and Instagram account that night. His account describes a turning point: Perry’s enthusiasm helped persuade him to treat his photography and dioramas as work worth sharing, rather than a private project alongside his hotel job. The available profile does not establish a formal business partnership between Perry and Gill.
