Ace Frehley, KISS’s founding lead guitarist, died at 74 on October 16, 2025, after a fall, according to the Associated Press and KISS’s official announcement. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley mourned him in a joint statement, calling him an “essential and irreplaceable” part of the band’s formative history.
What Gene Simmons said about Ace Frehley
Simmons’s tribute was issued jointly with fellow KISS co-founder Paul Stanley. The Associated Press reported their statement on October 16, 2025:
“We are devastated by the passing of Ace Frehley. He was an essential and irreplaceable rock soldier during some of the most formative foundational chapters of the band and its history. He is and will always be a part of KISS’s legacy.”
The wording recognizes Frehley’s role in KISS’s early history and continuing legacy; it was not a statement from Simmons alone. The AP report carrying the statement also identifies Frehley as one of the band’s four founding members, alongside Stanley, Simmons and Peter Criss.

How Ace Frehley died
Frehley died peacefully, surrounded by family, in Morristown, New Jersey, after a recent fall, AP reported. Universal Music Japan’s official KISS page announced his death at 74 on October 16 local time and thanked him for the music he created.
A later finding clarified the cause and manner of death. In November 2025, AP reported that the Morris County Medical Examiner determined Frehley died from blunt force injuries to the head sustained in a fall; the death was ruled an accident. AP’s report on the medical examiner’s determination is the basis for that account.

Frehley’s place in KISS and his career beyond it
Frehley helped form KISS in New York in 1973 with Stanley, Simmons and Criss, and played lead guitar in the original lineup. His time with the band was not continuous: he left in 1982, returned in the mid-1990s for the reunion of the original lineup, and departed again in 2002. The Los Angeles Times reported that he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with KISS in 2014. The Los Angeles Times obituary recounts that history.
He also pursued a solo career and performed with Frehley’s Comet, as AP noted. KISS’s “Beth” reached No. 7 on the Billboard Top 100 in 1976, according to AP; that is a KISS chart achievement, not a measure of Frehley’s solo career. AP’s obituary provides the chart context.
