When Zoey Tur told her daughter Katy in 2013, “I am a woman,” Katy said her first reaction was confusion and disbelief: “You’ve gotta be joking. You kidding? What are you talkin’ about?” She recalled the conversation in a 2022 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, alongside her father, while discussing her memoir, Rough Draft.
What Katy Tur recalled about her father coming out
Katy said Zoey called her in 2013 and told her, “I am a woman.” She recalled asking, “What?” before Zoey explained, “I’m a woman. I’m transitioning. I’m gonna become a woman.” Katy said she was “at first puzzled” and responded, “You’ve gotta be joking. You kidding? What are you talkin’ about?” The shorter “You Gotta Be Joking” wording captures part of her recollection, not the full exchange.
Zoey described the realization in personal terms: “I’m the wrong person. I’m gonna become the right person. Don’t you see, this is why I’ve been so angry.” That was Zoey’s explanation of her own past anger, not an independently established cause of her earlier behavior.
What Katy and Zoey said about their relationship
The 2022 interview featured both daughter and father. Zoey said, “Katy and I were very close,” and recalled that Katy “really looked up to me.” She added, “And I failed her. No father wants to fail their daughter.” Zoey also apologized for having been intimidating: “If the kids felt I was intimidating, I apologize. I did the best I could.”

Katy described a childhood marked by anger and violence, including holes punched in walls and batteries thrown at her mother. Zoey responded to those specific accounts cautiously: “Throwing batteries? Probably, yeah. Punching walls? There were a couple.” Zoey attributed the pressure in part to working in the news business. These are each person’s reported accounts of family history, not an independent finding about the events.
Why the estrangement should not be reduced to one cause
CBS reported that Katy and Zoey had different explanations for their estrangement. Zoey spoke of their former closeness and her sense that she had failed Katy; Katy discussed the family’s history. In 2024, PinkNews reported that Katy said their period of not speaking was not because of Zoey’s transition. The accounts do not establish one settled explanation for the distance between them.
