Before Blue Origin’s New Shepard flight on April 14, 2025, Katy Perry said she was excited not only about going to space but also about the engineering, mathematics and STEM behind the mission. She hoped the experience would help young people—especially girls—picture themselves traveling to space. The flight later took place as a brief suborbital trip with five other women aboard.
What did Katy Perry say before going to space?
In a preflight interview with the Associated Press, Perry said she was eager to learn about the engineering and mathematics involved in spaceflight:
“I’m really excited about the engineering of it all. I’m excited to learn more about STEM and just the math about what it takes to accomplish this type of thing,” she said.
She also described encouraging herself by thinking about the example the crew might set for future generations, especially girls:

How did Perry prepare, and what did she read?
Reporting before the launch said Perry had been reading Carl Sagan and studying string theory. The coverage also identified Cosmos among her reading or listening. That offers a glimpse of her intellectual preparation, but it does not establish an endorsement of a particular edition of Sagan’s work. The Associated Press’s April 11 report covers her interview and preparation; Space.com’s April 12 preview also discusses her STEM interest and Cosmos.

The only earlier all-female human spaceflight was Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo mission in 1963.
What did Perry say after the flight?
At a postflight news conference, Perry said, “We weren’t just taking up space. We were making space for the future.” The comment echoed the inspirational purpose she had described before launch, while reflecting on the completed flight.
