Cena said he threw away the remarks he had planned and called attention to the notes instead. More than a decade later, he described genuine emotion behind their rivalry and recalled apologizing to The Rock after their WrestleMania match.
What prompted Cena’s remark?
In a 2023 interview with Sam Roberts, Cena recalled that someone pointed out the writing shortly before his music played. “I had someone point it out to me, and it was 30 seconds before my music played. I had something planned, and just threw it away,” he said, as transcribed by Fightful.
At the time, The Rock was speaking in the ring and Cena interrupted, drawing attention to the notes. WWE’s official timeline places the exchange on the February 27, 2012 episode of Raw SuperShow, during the build to WrestleMania XXVIII.
How did Cena explain it in 2012?
In an interview account published by Inside Pulse on March 30, 2012, Cena said he saw the writing on a backstage monitor while at Gorilla Position, the area near the entrance. He said the sight became impossible to ignore: “That was something I saw right there. I wouldn’t have even said anything if I didn’t see it.”

That earlier account and his 2023 recollection are compatible: in 2012, he described seeing the writing on a monitor; later, he added that someone pointed it out roughly half a minute before he entered and that he abandoned his prepared material.
Was the callout planned?
A contemporaneous WrestleZone report said the reference was not planned and that The Rock had the notes for a lengthy live promo. That report attributed the information to an unnamed source close to the situation, so it is less direct evidence than Cena’s own account. Cena’s later description—that he discarded his planned remarks after the notes were pointed out—also frames the moment as an in-the-moment choice.

What did Cena say about the aftermath?
In the 2023 interview, Cena said the feud involved real feelings as well as the performance. “Of course, there were ramifications and it led to some genuine emotions between the two of us,” he said, according to Fightful’s transcription.
Cena recalled that the tension began to ease after their match. He said he apologized to The Rock and to The Rock’s mother, explaining that he had wanted to make the match matter and sell tickets, but should have collaborated rather than acting alone. That account of the private conversation and its effect comes from Cena’s recollection; the on-screen rivalry alone does not establish what either man privately felt.
