John Fogerty says he consciously forgave his brother Tom years after Tom’s death. The brothers did not reconcile while they were both alive: Tom died in 1990, and John has described his later forgiveness as a personal change in how he carried their painful history—not as something Tom heard or accepted.
What John Fogerty said about forgiving Tom
In a PEOPLE interview published August 15, 2025, John Fogerty described making a deliberate decision to forgive his brother long after Tom had died. As quoted in the interview’s AOL syndication, he said: “But many, many years after that, long after Tom had passed away, I actually made it a point in my own consciousness to forgive Tom for all of that.”
Fogerty also reflected on what might have happened if Tom had lived. “If he’d gotten a chance to survive, I think he would’ve come to the place where we’d say, ‘All that stuff’s crap,’ and let it go,” he said. That was a hope about a possible future, not a description of an actual reunion.
ABC Audio’s August 18, 2025 report quoted Fogerty saying, “We didn’t get that chance, but I feel that, at least on my side of it, I’ve felt happy and positive toward Tom.” He added that meeting his brother in the afterlife “would be a very joyful thing.” Those remarks describe John’s feelings; they do not establish what Tom would have thought or said.

Why were the brothers estranged?
The rift grew out of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s breakup and disputes surrounding the band, rather than a single disagreement. John and Tom were brothers and members of CCR, alongside Stu Cook and Doug Clifford. John was the group’s principal songwriter and leader, and tensions over band roles and music-business relationships formed part of the wider conflict.
Tom left CCR in 1971. The remaining trio announced the band’s split on October 16, 1972, after releasing Mardi Gras. Those are separate events: Tom’s departure came before the group’s formal end. The Guardian’s August 15, 2025 profile places the family fracture within wider tensions over John’s leadership and songwriting, as well as John’s later conflict with Fantasy Records and its executive Saul Zaentz.

In the PEOPLE interview as syndicated by AOL, John said Tom sided with Zaentz during the conflict and recalled that Tom called Zaentz his “best friend.” John said that felt like a dagger to his heart. The brothers never reconciled before Tom died, according to the interview. This account gives context to John’s pain, but it does not reduce the band’s split or the family estrangement to one cause.

Fogerty connected his more positive relationship with the past to Legacy: The Creedence Clearwater Revival Years, a project featuring his rerecorded versions of CCR songs with his sons Shane and Tyler. The project did not bring about a literal reconciliation with Tom. It offered John a way to revisit the music and memories with a changed perspective. The Guardian also reported that Fogerty had regained ownership of songs he wrote for Creedence and rerecorded 20 of them with his sons. These later recordings are not the original CCR masters; listeners looking for the band’s original performances should seek out the group-era recordings.

CCR emerged from a group of young musicians in El Cerrito, California, and became one of the defining American rock bands of its era. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s induction biography describes the group’s history and legacy; its 1993 induction material notes nine consecutive Top 10 singles. That success provides the backdrop to the brothers’ rupture: they shared a band and its music, even as arguments over roles and business relationships damaged their relationship.

The clearest answer to whether the brothers made up is therefore two-part: they did not reconcile in life, but John later said he forgave Tom and felt happy and positive toward him. His imagined possibility that they might have let the conflict go and made music together remains just that—a possibility he expressed after Tom’s death.
