What did DOJ release?
On January 30, 2026, the Department of Justice said it published more than 3 million additional pages responsive to the Epstein Files Transparency Act, along with more than 2,000 videos and 180,000 images. DOJ put the cumulative total across releases at nearly 3.5 million pages. These are the department’s stated publication figures, not independently audited counts in the cited material. DOJ said the material came from several sources, including Florida and New York Epstein cases, the New York case against Ghislaine Maxwell, investigations into Epstein’s death, a Florida case involving a former butler, FBI investigations, and an Office of Inspector General investigation into Epstein’s death. The department said more than 500 attorneys and reviewers worked on the production.
The department also described exclusions and redactions: duplicate documents, material withheld under privilege or statutory exceptions, unrelated items, and redactions intended to protect victims. DOJ said it did not redact notable individuals or politicians on that basis. It also cautioned that responsive material submitted to the FBI by members of the public could include fake or falsely submitted images, documents, or videos. DOJ characterized some claims about Trump in the production as unfounded and false; that is the department’s characterization, not an independently established finding.

Does a name in the files prove wrongdoing?
No. A person’s name appearing in a record does not, by itself, establish criminal conduct or even indicate the same kind of connection in every instance. The collection includes material gathered from investigations as well as public submissions, which DOJ warns may be false. A sound account needs to identify the particular document, explain its context, and distinguish a documented fact from an allegation, an unverified submission, or Kimmel’s interpretation.
That caution applies equally to political commentary about the release. Kimmel’s jokes or criticisms are his own statements; they are not findings by investigators or courts. Likewise, DOJ’s description of the production and its claims about particular material should remain attributed to the department.

How does the February 2 segment differ from Kimmel’s later criticism?
On February 11, Kimmel delivered a separate monologue criticizing DOJ’s handling of the records. In coverage published the next day, The Guardian reported that he asked, “This Department of Justice is hiding the names of people who were not victims. Why are they doing that?” and described his conclusion as calling the conduct “a brazen cover-up.” Those are Kimmel’s remarks as reported by the newspaper, not established legal findings—and they should not be attributed to the February 2 segment. The DOJ Epstein Library displayed a “Last Updated: September 11, 2026” notice when accessed, and the department says it may add material if it identifies further documents. DOJ also warns that some records, including handwritten material, may not be electronically searchable or may return unreliable search results.
