On Last Week Tonight on September 21, 2025, John Oliver criticized ABC’s indefinite preemption of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and urged Disney CEO Bob Iger to resist pressure and stand by Kimmel. Disney announced the next day that the show would return on September 23.
Why ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel’s show
On September 17, 2025, ABC announced that it would preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely. The decision followed Kimmel’s remarks about reactions to the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. ABC’s initial announcement did not give a reason for the preemption.
In reporting on the events around the announcement, the Associated Press said Nexstar had told ABC affiliates it would stop airing the program. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr had also publicly criticized Kimmel’s remarks and raised the possibility of regulatory action involving ABC and Disney. Those events formed part of the surrounding pressure, but the available statements do not establish a single cause for ABC’s decision.
What John Oliver said to Bob Iger
On the September 21 episode of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, Oliver discussed what the suspension meant for speech and how pressure had been brought to bear on the show. He urged viewers to cancel Disney+ and Hulu, then addressed Iger directly, arguing that the CEO should draw a line when confronted with demands Oliver considered unreasonable.

As reported in coverage of the segment, Oliver told Iger, “At some point, you’re going to have to draw a line.” He described the response he wanted as “F— you! Make me!” and compared yielding to pressure to “Giving the bully your lunch money,” warning that it would not make the bully go away. These are quotations as reproduced in reporting about the episode.
Oliver also said Kimmel had not denigrated Kirk or made light of his killing, while allowing that Kimmel might have been wrong about the suspect’s ideology. That was Oliver’s assessment, not a finding about Kimmel’s intent.

Disney’s explanation and Kimmel’s return
When Disney announced on September 22 that the show would return the following evening, it said the suspension had been intended “to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country.” The company also said it felt some of Kimmel’s comments were “ill-timed and thus insensitive,” and cited conversations with him in announcing the return.
The sequence matters: ABC’s September 17 announcement did not state a reason; subsequent reporting described pressure surrounding the decision; and Disney later gave its own explanation while announcing the show’s return.
