Yes. A24 has announced a reimagining of the 1988 martial-arts film Bloodsport, with Michaela Coel attached to write and direct. The announcement reports do not establish a plot, release date, production schedule or cast beyond Coel.
What is confirmed about the new Bloodsport?
A24 will finance and distribute the film. Marc Toberoff and Alberto Lensi are producers, while Stuart Manashil and Peggy DiSalle are executive producers. The project is being described as a reimagining of the original, not as a confirmed scene-for-scene remake. TheWrap reported the announcement on March 18, 2026; Variety covered it on March 19, 2026.
Who is making it?
Michaela Coel is writing and directing
Coel is attached as both writer and director. She said, “I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity and isolation the sport demands of them,” according to Variety.
Producers and distributor
A24 is financing and distributing the film. Toberoff and Lensi are producing, with Manashil and DiSalle as executive producers. Toberoff described the original as having introduced audiences to “the gritty aesthetic of mixed martial arts” and said he looked forward to bringing back its “high-energy tournament format,” Variety reported. That comment signals his interest in a tournament approach; it does not confirm the new film’s plot or structure.

No announced information confirms whether Coel’s film will retain Dux, the Kumite, or the original setting.
Will Jean-Claude Van Damme appear?
