What happens to Alex Kintner?
Alex is floating on a raft among the bathers when the shark attacks. He disappears beneath the water, and blood spreads through the crowded swimming area. The sudden attack raises the stakes: the threat is no longer something Brody merely suspects, but a danger that has struck in public.
How does the scene build suspense?
The attack is presented through Chief Brody’s anxious attention to the water. He scans the beach and its swimmers, while the audience shares his uncertainty about where the shark might appear. The moving crowd makes each glimpse of the water feel consequential.
Director Steven Spielberg said he originally wanted the build-up to Alex’s death to play as one sustained shot. When that proved impossible, he used bathers in different-colored swimsuits crossing in front of the camera as wipes, alternately revealing Brody or his point of view. As Spielberg put it, “It wasn’t one shot, but it gave a seamless feeling to the scene.” He described the intention and technique in a 2023 Vanity Fair interview.

The result keeps the viewer oriented around Brody rather than offering a detached view of the beach. His scanning becomes part of the suspense: the audience watches the same space, waiting for a sign that his fear is justified.
Why does the attack matter to the story?
Alex’s death is a turning point because Brody’s concern is confirmed by a fatal attack in front of a crowded beach. The scene shifts the danger from a possibility to an urgent public reality, increasing the pressure on Brody to act. Its impact comes both from what happens to Alex and from the long stretch of uncertainty before the attack.

What do the scene’s colors and production details add?
Spielberg said he asked production designer Joe Alves not to make red dominant in the film’s sets, so the color could carry more weight when blood appeared. He also cited Alex’s red bathing suit as part of the film’s use of red for symbolism and foreshadowing. That is the director’s account of the color design, rather than a single definitive interpretation of every detail.
Amblin Entertainment credits Steven Spielberg as director, Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb as screenwriters, and Verna Fields as editor. Its official Jaws page says principal photography began on May 2, 1974, and wrapped 159 days later amid technical and weather difficulties; filming took place on Martha’s Vineyard and at sea.

The Daily Jaws reports that the beach sequence was filmed over three days at State Beach in June 1974. It describes a submerged cylinder triggered by compressed air for the blood effect and recounts actor Jeffrey Voorhees’s account of being pulled underwater by divers. The same account says the raft-attack shot was later filmed as second-unit work by production designer Joe Alves, using a mechanical shark and mannequin; it attributes that detail to a companion book rather than a primary interview. These are secondary-source production accounts, not details established by Amblin’s official page.

The film credits Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb as its screenwriters, and Spielberg has said that his adaptation focused on the sea-hunt adventure while discarding some of the novel’s subplots. The available production and interview accounts do not establish exactly how Alex’s death is staged in Benchley’s book, so a scene-by-scene comparison would require checking the novel itself.
