An October 8 report put the film in 535 U.S. theaters and said additional North American screenings, including in Canada, were being offered. Avex later described the U.S. release as reaching more than 500 theaters. Those are historical release figures, not a current theater schedule.
When did Look Back come to theaters in North America?
GKIDS announced on August 23, 2024, that it had acquired North American theatrical and home-video rights from Avex Pictures. The distributor scheduled Japanese-language screenings to begin October 4, 2024. Its announcement also described the film’s strong Japanese box office: it opened on 119 screens and earned more than 1 billion yen during its first two weeks. GKIDS’s announcement concerns both the North American release and the earlier Japanese run, so those theater counts should not be conflated.
Did Look Back expand to more theaters?
Yes. An October 8, 2024 report said GKIDS was offering additional North American screenings, including in Canada, after the film’s opening. Avex’s later interview says the U.S. release reached more than 500 theaters. The available figures establish a broad U.S. reach and added North American screenings, but do not provide a complete timeline of each theater or a final North American total.
Avex also recounts a separate expansion in Japan: the original plan for around 120 theaters grew to more than 300 after the opening. The Japanese figure describes that country’s run, not the North American release. The distinction matters because a planned Japanese count and a later U.S. reach are different measures from different release stages.

How many theaters showed Look Back in the U.S.?
Red’s Nerd Den’s October 8, 2024 report, citing The Numbers and Box Office Mojo, put the U.S. opening in 535 theaters. Avex’s 2026 interview describes the film more generally as having played in over 500 U.S. theaters. The contemporary report gives a specific opening-weekend count; Avex’s later account confirms the release’s scale without specifying the same measure or a date-by-date theater count.
How much did Look Back make at the box office?
The October 8, 2024 report gave an estimated U.S. opening-weekend gross of $688,253 and a reported U.S. cumulative gross of $1,238,024 through October 7. These are dated secondary-reported estimates, not an independently established final North American gross. The figures in Avex’s 2026 interview instead describe the Japanese and overseas runs:

The measures and dates are not interchangeable: the U.S. dollar amounts are specific reported snapshots, while Avex’s later yen figures cover Japan and overseas markets on different timelines. Avex attributes the film’s reach in part to audience word of mouth; that is the company’s account, not a quantified audience study.
What is the film, and why did its theatrical format matter?
Look Back is a 58-minute animated adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s one-shot manga, directed and adapted by Kiyotaka Oshiyama. Its story follows schoolgirls Fujino and Kyomoto, brought together by their interest in drawing manga. GKIDS calls it Oshiyama’s feature-length directorial debut and the first feature production from Studio Durian.

Avex’s interview notes that the short runtime allowed some theaters to schedule as many as 18 screenings a day. Ryo Ohyama of Avex Pictures said the length could also make it easier for viewers to fit a screening into their schedule, and described that as potential for mid-length films. This offers a practical explanation for the format’s theatrical flexibility, rather than a documented North American distributor explanation for the expansion.
