The clearest way to reconcile them is that the stories depict different kinds of movement through time. Endgame sends the Avengers into past events with Quantum Realm technology, where their actions create branches; Loki’s time-slipping moves him among moments in the TVA’s chronology. That distinction fits what the stories establish, though Marvel has not supplied a complete rulebook covering every time-slip.
What time-travel rule does Endgame establish?
Endgame presents time travel as a way to visit the past, not rewrite the travelers’ own present. The Avengers use technology built around the Quantum Realm to reach earlier moments. When they alter events, those changes produce an alternate timeline rather than changing the history they came from. TIME’s explainer of the film’s time-travel logic describes this branching model.
Co-director Anthony Russo put the rule plainly: “In the movie, the Hulk is very explicit about what our rules are, which is you cannot change the present by altering the past. All you can do by going to the past — and for a character like Cap, living in the past — is create an alternate future.” Russo said the filmmakers chose the multiverse theory after discussing possible time-travel models with physicists. His 2019 interview with the Los Angeles Times confirms that this is the film’s intended framework.
The film’s 2012 New York sequence illustrates the distinction: Loki escapes with the Tesseract, but that escape belongs to a branch. It does not erase the Avengers’ originating present. The Ancient One’s warning about the Infinity Stones addresses a related risk: removing a Stone from a timeline can damage that reality, so the Avengers must return the Stones to the places they took them from.

How is Loki’s time-slipping different?
Season 2 describes Loki’s time-slipping as an involuntary phenomenon that carries him through the TVA’s past, present, and future. It is not the Avengers’ engineered trip to selected past events for the “time heist.” Marvel’s Season 2 description frames the slipping as the central problem Loki must understand; the finale recap describes his season-long mission across timelines and his return to the TVA.
| Question | Avengers: Endgame | Loki Season 2 |
|---|---|---|
| How does the movement happen? | The Avengers use engineered Quantum Realm technology to travel to past moments. | Loki experiences time-slipping; it is presented as something happening to him. |
| Where does it take the character? | To past events where changes create branches rather than rewrite the originating present. | Among different moments in the TVA’s chronology. |
| How explicit are the rules? | The branch rule is explained in dialogue and confirmed by co-director Anthony Russo. | The premise is established, but the sources do not fully codify every time-slip rule. |
Why the distinction resolves the apparent contradiction
The question “Why can Loki change the past if Endgame says you can’t?” assumes both stories use the same mechanism. They do not establish that. Endgame explains what happens when people use a time machine to enter the past: their actions branch into another timeline. Loki shows a character being pulled through TVA time, a setting and phenomenon the film’s time-heist rules do not specifically define.

That makes “different mechanisms” the most supportable reconciliation, not a definitive, universal MCU physics law. The available material does not explain every detail of Loki’s slips or declare that all time travel across Marvel stories follows one consistent system.

Russo’s comments make Endgame’s branch rule unusually clear: changing the past creates an alternate future, not a rewritten present. By contrast, Loki executive producer Kevin Wright described a deliberate preference for keeping the show’s rules simple. “Our Bible from season one on: simplicity,” he said, explaining that the team sought to condense essential information and avoid overwhelming viewers with exposition. He also said the writers would pare back explanations that risked confusing the audience or over-defining rules.

Wright’s remarks explain the show’s storytelling approach; they do not prove that every apparent difference from Endgame was planned or fully resolved. The safest reading is to follow the specific rules each story states and avoid treating an unexplained detail in one as a refutation of the other.
