Keri Hilson says she objected to recording the verse on the “Turnin’ Me On” remix that listeners read as a diss toward Beyoncé. In an April 2025 interview on The Breakfast Club, she said producer Polow Da Don presented her with lyrics written by someone else and pressured her to record them, allegedly tying the decision to whether her still-unreleased album would come out. That is Hilson’s account, not an independently established finding.
What Hilson says happened
Hilson recalled expecting to write a remix verse for her 2009 song “Turnin’ Me On.” Instead, she said, Polow Da Don played her a verse another writer had written. She told him she did not want to record it and tried to write her own version.
Hilson said the pressure became forceful: her album had not yet been released, and she understood the message to be that it would not come out unless she recorded the supplied verse. The Associated Press and iHeartRadio reported her account of that threat; neither report independently establishes that the album’s release was actually made conditional on the verse.
Looking back, Hilson said, “The mistake that I made was not continuing to fight,” adding that she was in tears and adamant she did not want to do it. She also said, “those are not my words.” The statements were quoted in 2025 coverage of the interview.

Who wrote the verse?
April 2025 coverage identifies songwriter Ester Dean as the writer of the verse. iHeartRadio reported Dean was credited with writing it, and The Source reported that Dean identified herself as its writer after the interview discussion circulated. This is the attribution reported in those accounts, not an independent review of songwriting registrations or rights records.
Why listeners connected the lyrics to Beyoncé
The verse was widely interpreted as being aimed at Beyoncé. In particular, listeners connected the phrase “move it to the left” with Beyoncé’s 2006 hit “Irreplaceable,” which includes the instruction to put belongings “to the left.” That connection describes audience interpretation; the cited reports do not establish that Beyoncé was the confirmed target or that Hilson intended the lyric as a personal attack.

Hilson’s account distinguishes the verse from her own words: she says she objected to it and was pressured to perform it. The reports do not establish Beyoncé’s view of the controversy. The Associated Press said she had not publicly commented as of its April 2025 report.
