He was 74. His wife, Jan Bridges, confirmed his death in a statement; the statement did not give a cause.
Who was Leon Russell?
Born Claude Russell Bridges in Oklahoma in 1942, Russell began piano lessons at four. As a teenager he played clubs in Tulsa; at 17, he moved to Los Angeles and entered the city’s studio scene as a session musician. He went on to work as a pianist, guitarist, singer, songwriter, arranger, producer, bandleader, touring musician and record-company owner, according to his official biography.
That range helps explain why Russell mattered both as a recording artist and as a musician other artists relied on. He worked in rock, blues, gospel, country, bluegrass, pop and other styles, shifting between the supporting role of a studio player and the lead role of a songwriter and bandleader.
What songs did Leon Russell write?
Russell’s best-known songs include “A Song for You,” “This Masquerade,” “Tight Rope,” “Delta Lady,” “Hummingbird” and “Superstar.” Several became part of other artists’ repertoires: Ray Charles recorded “A Song for You,” B.B. King recorded “Hummingbird,” the Carpenters recorded “Superstar,” and Joe Cocker recorded “Delta Lady,” according to Russell’s official biography.

“A Song for You” is a particularly clear example of the reach of his writing. The Oklahoma Hall of Fame’s 2022 biography says more than 100 artists recorded it. Its many interpretations reflect a central strength of Russell’s songwriting: a song could leave his own performance behind and still feel at home in another singer’s style.
How did Russell shape music beyond his own records?
From the Los Angeles studios to the road
In Los Angeles, Russell became part of the network of session players often associated with the Wrecking Crew. His work as a pianist and collaborator put him in the studio orbit of major artists, while his arranging and production skills let him shape more than his own performances. His career also included founding Shelter Records with Denny Cordell.

The live double album documented that large-scale ensemble project; the same biography reports it reached No. 2 on U.S. album charts and sold more than a million copies.
A place in landmark collaborations
Russell also performed at George Harrison’s 1971 Concert for Bangladesh, a major benefit event. These projects show how his career connected studio work, touring bands and high-profile collaborations rather than following a single-artist path.

What did other musicians hear in Russell?
Russell’s influence was especially evident to fellow pianists and songwriters. Bruce Hornsby wrote in a tribute on Russell’s official site: “Leon Russell (along with Elton John and later Keith Jarrett) was the inspiration that made me interested in and then consumed with playing piano and writing songs. He was completely unique, a deep soulful presence who had a groove and feel on the piano that was unmatched.”
Elton John, who later inducted Russell into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, described him as a mentor and inspiration. Recalling their connection, John said, “It was the most magical of times because here was my idol accepting me. Actually, he could eat me for breakfast [playing piano].” His fuller tribute on Russell’s official site describes how Russell’s generosity helped validate him as a young musician.
