Jeep paused its Super Bowl commercial starring Bruce Springsteen after news surfaced that he had been arrested months earlier and cited for driving under the influence, reckless driving and drinking in a closed area. The later court outcome was narrower: the first two charges were dismissed, and Springsteen pleaded guilty to the alcohol-in-a-closed-area offense. Jeep subsequently said it was “unpausing the film.”
What happened, and when?
The sequence matters: Springsteen’s arrest preceded the ad, but the news became public only after the commercial had aired.
- November 14, 2020: Springsteen was arrested in Gateway National Recreation Area in New Jersey and received citations for driving while under the influence, reckless driving and consuming alcohol in a closed area. These were initial citations, not convictions. The Guardian reported the arrest and citations.
- February 7, 2021: “The Middle,” a two-minute Jeep commercial featuring Springsteen, aired during Super Bowl LV. Its message centered on finding common ground and national unity. ABC News covered the commercial and its Super Bowl airing.
- February 10–11, 2021: Reports of the November arrest became public. Jeep said it would pause the Big Game commercial while the facts were established. CBS News, carrying Associated Press reporting, covered Jeep’s response.
- February 24, 2021: A federal judge dismissed the driving-while-intoxicated and reckless-driving charges. Springsteen pleaded guilty to consuming alcohol in an enclosed area. The Guardian reported the court outcome.
- After the hearing: Jeep said it was “unpausing the film” after the matter had been resolved. The Washington Post reported Jeep’s decision.
Why did Jeep pause the commercial?
Jeep said it could not substantiate details of a matter it had only read about, and that it was appropriate to pause the ad until the facts could be established. Its statement also said the commercial’s message of community and unity remained relevant, while adding that drinking and driving could never be condoned. The comments were attributed to Jeep’s statement, not to a named executive. CBS News relayed the statement through Associated Press reporting.
Reports said the commercial was removed from Jeep’s YouTube and social-media channels during the pause. That does not establish that it disappeared from every platform or placement.

What happened to Springsteen’s charges?
The eventual disposition was not a conviction for driving while intoxicated or reckless driving. Both charges were dismissed. Springsteen pleaded guilty to consuming alcohol in an enclosed area and was fined $500, plus $40 in court fees, according to The Guardian’s 2021 report.
That distinction is central to the story: “DUI arrest” describes the initial arrest and citation, while the court outcome was a guilty plea to the separate closed-area alcohol offense.

Did Jeep put “The Middle” back?
Jeep said it was unpausing the film after the court matter was resolved. The reported decision establishes the company’s stated status change; it does not show that the original ad returned to every platform or that every prior placement was restored.
