Luke Bryan hugged Ryan Seacrest after Emmy Russell’s original song “Want You” moved the host to tears on the April 14, 2024 episode of American Idol. Seacrest said he was crying, and Bryan offered him comfort; the moment followed Russell’s performance and was separate from the judges’ decision to save her.
What prompted the hug?
During the Top 20 round, Emmy Russell performed “Want You,” an original song about wanting affection from a partner who did not return her feelings. After the performance, Seacrest said, “I’m crying.” Katy Perry teased him about wanting somebody to want him, and he answered, “Love me, love me like I love you.”

Bryan then stood up from the judges’ desk and said, “Ryan, I’ll give you a hug.” Seacrest jumped into Bryan’s arms, turning a vulnerable reaction into a warm, lightly comic moment on the show. Us Weekly’s April 15, 2024 report recounts the exchange.
Why was Seacrest emotional?
Seacrest explained that Russell had written the song herself and that its lyrics were her own, which made the performance especially moving to him. He also said the moment had felt emotional backstage. The account ties his reaction to Russell’s personal song; it does not establish a deeper personal reason for his tears.

Who is Emmy Russell, and what happened next?
Russell is the granddaughter of country singer Loretta Lynn. She advanced after the judges saved her from elimination in the Top 20 round. Elleigh Marie, KBlocks, Blake Proehl, and Hailey Mia were eliminated. Bryan later praised Russell’s performance as real and emotionally resonant, then joked that Seacrest was the “most expensive thing I’ve ever held.” Yahoo Entertainment’s April 15, 2024 republication of Entertainment Weekly coverage also notes Russell’s family connection and the emotional performance.
The sequence matters: Bryan’s hug came in response to Seacrest’s reaction after the song. The reporting does not say the hug influenced the judges’ decision to save Russell.
