The Lotterywest Avon Descent Festivals are community events held alongside the Avon Descent, a two-day, 124 km river event in Western Australia. In 2026, festival activity was listed in Northam, Swan and Bayswater. Those listings are now historical: the sources reviewed do not confirm dates or a programme for the next edition.
What are the Lotterywest Avon Descent Festivals?
The festivals accompany the Avon Descent, whose official event site describes a 124 km journey ending in Bayswater. Festival activity has included events in Northam, the City of Swan and Bayswater. These community gatherings give spectators and families places to enjoy entertainment and activities around the river event; they are distinct local events rather than a single festival at one venue. What was listed for the 2026 edition?
The council listings below were for Sunday, 9 August 2026. They describe past events, not a confirmed schedule for a future Avon Descent.
| Festival | Venue and hours listed for 2026 | Activities described | Race viewing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northam Bilya Festival | Northam; the Shire page reviewed does not state hours. | Marked the Avon Descent’s official inauguration. The Shire says “Bilya” means “river” in Nyoongar and that the festival was rebranded in 2021 to better reflect local Noongar culture and Ballardong Nyoongar country. Shire of Northam | Not stated on the reviewed Shire page. |
| City of Swan Avon Descent Festival | Lilac Hill Park, 850 West Swan Road, Caversham; 10am–3pm. City of Swan listing | Free entry, family activities, food trucks, artisan markets, entertainment and a river-themed interactive sensory zone; dogs on leads were welcome. | At the river event, but the listing does not specify a viewing point or competitor arrival time. |
| City of Bayswater Finish Line Festival | Riverside Gardens, Bayswater; 11am–5pm. City of Bayswater listing | Free family event with live music, food and market stalls, performers, rides, games and children’s activities. | At the finish, with opportunities to watch competitors complete the event. |
The Northam cultural context is the Shire’s description; it should not be treated as a broader explanation of Noongar or Ballardong culture. Festival attractions and logistics can vary between editions. The Bayswater listing says vendors and event details are subject to change and weather conditions. City of Bayswater event information

How to choose a festival stop
- For a finish-line view: Bayswater was the listed finish-line festival, at Riverside Gardens.
- For the Swan event: Lilac Hill Park in Caversham hosted the City of Swan festival, with family activities, markets and entertainment.
- For Northam: the Bilya Festival marks the Avon Descent’s official inauguration and has a stated local cultural context.
- For travel planning: compare the current venue, hours and access information from each organizer before choosing a stop. The 2026 hours and locations should not be assumed to apply to a later edition.
Where can you watch the Avon Descent, and when do competitors arrive?
For a future event, use the organizer’s current spectator locations guidance and arrival information rather than relying on an old timetable. The official guidance asks spectators to use publicly accessible locations and respect landowners’ wishes. It also advises considering distance from the river and the possibility that craft may exit the water.
Published arrival times are guides, not guarantees. River levels, rainfall, event start times and fog delays can affect when competitors pass. Check for current updates before travelling to a viewing location. Avon Descent spectator information
