Who takes over Firehouse 51 in Season 13?
Pascal arrives after Boden leaves Firehouse 51 for a promotion to CFD Deputy Commissioner. NBC’s official streaming listing describes the Season 13 premiere, “A Monster in the Field,” as an episode in which a new chief shakes up the house: Peacock’s Season 13 listing.

Dermot Mulroney joined the series as Dom Pascal, a chief arriving from Miami whose leadership style differs from Boden’s, according to TVLine’s July 25, 2024 casting report. Here, “new chief” means the leader of Firehouse 51—not the top official of the entire Chicago Fire Department.
Why did viewers expect Herrmann to replace Boden?
When Boden moves up to Deputy Commissioner, he tells Herrmann he hopes Herrmann will eventually take his place at Firehouse 51. That succession depends on Herrmann advancing first: Boden points him toward captain and then the battalion chief test. Pascal leads the house in the meantime, TVLine reported.

Herrmann does pursue advancement. In a November 2024 interview, David Eigenberg said his character was preparing for the captain exam. He described the trade-off of becoming an officer: “When you take on an officer’s advancement, you step further away from the actual fire, but you also take on the responsibility of the lives,” Eigenberg told TVLine.
Does Herrmann become chief?
No. Herrmann becomes captain and considers taking the chief test, but he decides that he does not want the chief’s job. In the Season 13 finale, he steps down to regular firefighter duties so Mouch can become lieutenant on Engine, according to TV Insider’s May 23, 2025 recap and TVLine’s May 21, 2025 finale report.

Pascal remains battalion chief through the end of Season 13. Showrunner Andrea Newman told TVLine, “He will stay as battalion chief until the CFD axe starts lurking above his head.” That statement describes his position at that point in the story; later seasons may change the characters’ roles.
