His recollections of being in the studio as a nine-year-old give the conversation its documentary-like center, before it opens into reflections on songwriting, family, fame and music as a way of feeling close to a parent.
What the episode is about
Hosted by John Spong, One by Willie is a podcast about notable Willie Nelson fans and the Willie song they love. This special episode, published ahead of Willie’s 90th birthday, features his son Lukas talking through “I Never Cared for You.” The focus is the song’s Teatro recording, not a claim that the 1998 album recording was the song’s original release. Why Lukas calls the song timeless
Lukas is struck by the song’s writing and imagery, which he describes as carrying the weight of something older than an ordinary song. In the transcript, he says: “There’s an authority to it. There’s a sense of it coming from . . . It sounds more like an ancient text than it does a song.” The remark captures the episode’s central question—“What’s so cool about ‘I Never Cared for You’?”—without reducing the answer to a technical breakdown: for Lukas, the words seem vivid and enduring.
His memory of the Teatro sessions
Lukas recalls being nine when Willie recorded the Teatro version with producer Daniel Lanois. He remembers his father’s excitement about singing harmonies with Emmylou Harris, and recalls Willie admiring how Harris could follow his phrasing. These are Lukas’s memories as shared in the interview; the episode presents them as a child’s perspective on a family recording session, not as a studio log or independent account of every detail.

The distinction matters: the conversation is about the particular 1998 album performance, including Harris’s harmonies. It does not treat that recording as interchangeable with the song’s earlier history.

The discussion moves beyond the track into Lukas’s childhood, including time spent between Hawaii and Austin and growing up around touring and music. He talks about the complications of fame and credits his mother with helping keep the family grounded. He also reflects on music becoming part of his own identity, and on learning guitar as a way to feel closer to his father.

Lukas describes Willie as a normal person who does not rely on pretense. That is his perspective in the interview, rather than an independent biographical conclusion. Taken together, the memories make the song a doorway into the relationship behind the recording: a son’s account of watching his father work, and of finding his own connection to him through music.
