No—the original Disney Club Penguin desktop game is no longer online. It closed in March 2017. Independent fan-made recreations have appeared since then, but they are separate services, not Disney’s original game, and their availability can change.
What was Club Penguin?
Club Penguin was a children’s online virtual world that launched in October 2005. Players used penguin avatars to explore a snowy island, chat, join group activities and decorate igloos with in-game currency. Disney announced that it had acquired the company on August 1, 2007. In that announcement, Disney reported more than 700,000 paid subscribers and more than 12 million activated users—historical figures from 2007, not current audience numbers. D23’s Club Penguin history and Disney’s acquisition announcement provide the background.
Disney president and CEO Bob Iger said at the time that “Club Penguin embodies principles that are of the utmost importance to Disney – providing high-quality family entertainment and fostering parental trust.” The statement reflects Disney’s 2007 acquisition announcement, not an endorsement of later fan projects. Read the announcement.
When did the original Club Penguin shut down?
The University of Toronto’s shutdown archive catalogs Disney’s announcement as dated January 31, 2017, and records March 29 as the scheduled permanent server-closure date. An independent history page reports that the original desktop experience closed on March 30, 2017. The sources differ by one day on the closure date, so the reliably stated answer is that the original service ended in March 2017. See the shutdown record.

Can you still play Club Penguin?
There have been fan-made recreations of different Club Penguin eras. A fan archive directory reviewed on August 16, 2026 listed projects including Club Penguin Journey, New Club Penguin and Club Penguin Legacy as presenting playable services at the time of its review. That is a dated directory snapshot, not a guarantee that any project is playable now, will remain online, or is safe. The directory also explains that “active” means a project presents a playable service—not that its uptime or safety is guaranteed. Consult the fan archive directory.
These projects are independent third-party services, each with its own operators and account systems. Club Penguin Legacy describes itself as a free-to-play recreation and says it is not affiliated with Disney. New Club Penguin’s legacy notice likewise describes a fan-made, unaffiliated recreation, but discusses a temporary Flash closure during a planned HTML5 transition; it should not be taken as evidence of the project’s current operating status. See the directory’s project information and New Club Penguin’s notice.

How to check a recreation before signing up
If you want to revisit the world, verify the individual project’s current status and privacy practices before registering. A directory listing cannot establish that a service is secure or continuously available. Use a unique password for any independent service, rather than reusing one tied to other accounts.
- Check whether the project is currently presenting a playable service, rather than relying on an old status notice.
- Look at which era or version it recreates and whether access is through a browser or a separate client.
- Review language options and the operator’s privacy rules before creating an account.
- Do not assume Disney operates, endorses or supports a fan recreation.
What about Club Penguin toys and merchandise?
Disney’s 2007 announcement mentioned online merchandise sales, including puffle plush toys, T-shirts and gift cards. That historical reference does not establish current inventory, a seller’s authenticity, present licensing or access to the game. A plush or other collectible can be a nostalgia item, but buying one does not let you play Club Penguin. Disney’s announcement.
