Which character is Robert Downey Jr. playing in Avengers: Doomsday?
Marvel Studios announced Downey’s return at San Diego Comic-Con on July 27, 2024, as Doctor Doom. Disney’s announcement introduced him as “Victor von Doom,” and Downey said, “New mask, same task.” The announcement described him as last seen in the MCU as Tony Stark/Iron Man; it did not announce a return to that role. Disney’s 2024 announcement and the official film listing identify Doom as his character.
Disney currently lists Avengers: Doomsday for theatrical release on December 18, 2026. Release dates can change, so check the official listing for the latest schedule.
Has an Iron Man return been confirmed?
No. The official materials reviewed confirm Downey as Doctor Doom, but do not announce him as Tony Stark/Iron Man in either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. A claim that he will return as Iron Man is therefore an unconfirmed theory, not an established plot fact. Rumors, leaks, or a perceived resemblance between Doom and Iron Man are not official confirmation.

What do we know about the story so far?
A September 2026 Disney report described promotional footage shown with Avengers: Endgame: Encore. In that footage, Doom collects Bruce Banner, and characters in a TVA scene witness the multiverse collapsing through concurrent incursions. Disney said the cause of the catastrophe remains a mystery. The report offers a glimpse of the setup, not a full account of the film’s plot. Read Disney’s report on the footage.
Director Anthony Russo described the broad connection to the previous Avengers film this way: “You really need to pick the story up from where you left it in Endgame.” That comment points to a narrative continuation from Avengers: Endgame; it does not establish that Tony Stark will return. Disney’s report attributes the remark to Russo.
Why do fans connect Doctor Doom with Iron Man?
There is a comics precedent for Victor von Doom taking on the Iron Man mantle. Marvel’s Infamous Iron Man Vol. 1: Infamous collects issues #1–6 and features Doom in that identity. It is a relevant parallel, but a comics storyline does not confirm the plot of a film adaptation. Marvel’s collection page describes the book and Doom’s Iron Man identity.
