It was a tribute to his hero—and, in his telling, the product of the preparation and professional discipline that distinguish a stunt performer from a daredevil. In a 2021 interview with New Atlas, Braun discusses the jump, the film Stuntman, and the career behind the spectacle.
What is Stuntman about?
Stuntman is a feature-length documentary about Braun’s career and his preparation for the Snake River Canyon rocket-bike jump. The film’s focus is broader than the launch itself: it follows the years of work that led to the event and the life of a professional stunt performer.

In the 2021 interview, Braun said he had not intended to star in a film about himself: “I certainly never meant to star in my own film.” The documentary’s subject emerged from the scale of the jump and the story behind it, rather than from a plan to build a personal showcase.
Why did Braun attempt the Snake River Canyon jump?
Braun described the jump as an effort to fulfill a dream of his hero, Evel Knievel—not to claim the rocket or the feat for himself. The distinction matters to his account of the event: the project was a tribute to Knievel’s ambition, even as Braun became the person who carried it out.
#1 Best Overall
The interview links the Evel Spirit rocket bike to Scott Truax, who built it from blueprints associated with his father, Bob Truax, builder of Knievel’s original Sky Cycle. That project history is presented here as reported in the interview, not as an independent technical history of the machine.
How does Braun distinguish a stunt professional from a daredevil?
Braun’s central distinction is preparation. He says professional stunt performers do homework, plan for a desired outcome, and aim to perform reliably—not simply take a risk for its own sake. As he put it in the edited New Atlas interview: “There is a big, distinct difference between a daredevil and a professional stuntman.”
That preparation also depends on trust. Braun described learning through mentorship from an established performer and emphasized the importance of keeping one’s commitments: “As a stunt man, your word is the only thing you have.” His description offers a view of stunt work as a profession built on planning, experience, and credibility, rather than spectacle alone.
What does the interview say about Knievel’s failed jump?
Braun said he was not present for Knievel’s jump and declined to speculate about why Knievel’s parachute deployed. The interview therefore does not establish the cause of that failure, and Braun’s account should not be treated as a technical explanation of it.

What was Braun doing after the jump?
In 2021, Braun said he was moving away from major stunts toward smaller work while starting a film production company. He described the prospect of leaving the biggest stunts behind as “a quiet, graceful way to bow out.” That was his statement at the time of the interview, not confirmation of his present-day career.
