The phrase “love triangle” compresses a complicated sequence into a misleading picture of three people in one simultaneous relationship. The better-supported chronology is that Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis began a long relationship after a 1959 Mediterranean cruise, and Onassis married Jacqueline Kennedy in 1968. How that private relationship began and what continued after the wedding are less certain than the dates themselves.
What was the relationship between Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis?
Callas, the Greek-American opera soprano, and Onassis, the Greek shipping magnate, met before their relationship became romantic. Town & Country places their first meeting at a 1957 party in Venice hosted by Elsa Maxwell, but that date comes from a retrospective timeline rather than a contemporaneous record. Their connection is generally traced to a 1959 Mediterranean cruise aboard Onassis’s yacht, the Christina.
Callas joined the cruise with her husband, Giovanni Battista Meneghini, whom she had married in 1949. Onassis was also married: his wife was Athina, commonly known as Tina, Livanos. The official Maria Callas biography says the cruise brought Callas and Onassis closer and that Callas left Meneghini weeks afterward. Town & Country describes the cruise as the start of the affair. These accounts support the broad sequence, not a precise, independently established date for when the relationship became romantic.
Retrospective accounts commonly describe the relationship as lasting through much of the 1960s. The official Callas biography calls it nine years; TIME’s October 1974 profile described the affair as lasting nearly a decade. Those are sources’ characterizations of a private relationship, not a public record of its exact start and end.

When did Aristotle Onassis marry Jackie Kennedy?
Onassis married Jacqueline Kennedy on October 20, 1968, on the Greek island of Skorpios, according to Biography.com. The White House archive independently confirms that Kennedy married Onassis in 1968, though it does not give the day or location in its biographical entry.
The marriage followed Callas and Onassis’s long-running relationship, but it does not establish exactly when that relationship ended or what contact they had afterward. Some later accounts say the two met again after the wedding; the frequency and romantic nature of any subsequent contact are not firmly established by the strongest sources in this chronology.

How did the relationship intersect with Callas’s career?
Callas’s professional life changed during the years of her relationship with Onassis, but the timeline alone cannot show that the relationship caused those changes. Her final operatic appearance was in London as Tosca in 1965, according to the official Maria Callas biography. Onassis married Kennedy three years later.
The official biography reproduces a later remark attributed to Callas: “I was kept in a cage so long that when I met Aristo and his friends I became a different woman.” The biography does not identify when or in what interview context she said it, so it is best read as a personal recollection rather than a complete explanation of her career or private life.

Did Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis have a child?
There is no established proof that Callas was pregnant with Onassis’s child. In a December 2024 account, TIME reported that biographers it consulted found no proof. More detailed claims about pregnancy, miscarriage or abortion should therefore be treated as disputed accounts, not settled fact.

The basic chronology is clearer than the motives often attached to it. Onassis and Callas were linked after the 1959 cruise; Onassis married Kennedy in 1968; he died in March 1975, and Callas died in September 1977, aged 53. The White House archive records Onassis’s death year, while the official Callas biography gives her death date and age.

Claims that Onassis chose Kennedy for social status, that Callas was his “true love,” or that either spouse married for a particular private reason are interpretations, not facts established by the dates. They may make for dramatic retellings, but the available chronology does not settle what any of the three felt or intended.
