There is no single lighting rig used by every theatre. Standard theatre lighting is better understood as a set of shared goals and design practices: make performers visible, create the performance environment, and help the audience understand the story. The instruments and their positions depend on the venue, production, available hanging points, and control system.
What does theatre lighting need to do?
The Educational Theatre Association identifies three objectives for lighting design: “To create an environment in which the event will take place”; “To make the actors visible”; and “To assist the audience in understanding the story.” These goals can overlap. A lighting look might illuminate an actor while also suggesting a location, directing attention, or changing the mood of a scene. The balance depends on the production.
In one example, the EdTA article describes using washes, directional highlights, backlight, color, and patterned effects to build a scene. Those are possible design choices, not a required recipe for every show. EdTA’s lighting-design overview explains the objectives and illustrates how a designer can apply them.
What do the different stage lights do?
ANSI/IES RP-41-20, a 2020 recommended practice for design professionals, discusses several instrument families. They are categories a theatre may consider—not a checklist of fixtures every venue must own. A fixture’s usefulness depends on the beam it produces, the distance to the stage, the desired coverage, and the production’s needs.

| Instrument family | Typical design role |
|---|---|
| Ellipsoidal spotlights | Focused beams for selective illumination or shaping a defined area. |
| Fresnels | Soft-edged beams commonly used to illuminate areas or blend into broader coverage. |
| Floodlights | Broad illumination where a sharply defined beam is not the aim. |
| PAR lights | Beam-based fixtures used for washes and other broad or directional effects, depending on the unit and setup. |
| Strip lights and cyclorama lights | Linear illumination that can light scenery or a cyclorama, the large backdrop often used to create a visual background. |
| Follow spots | Manually operated beams that track a performer or other moving subject. |
| Projectors | Fixtures used to project images or patterned light. |
| Automated instruments | Fixtures whose functions, such as position or beam characteristics, can be changed through control. |
The table describes broad roles, not fixed performance guarantees: individual fixtures and their optics differ. The IES practice also covers accessories, equipment layout and selection, dimmers and controls, house and backstage lighting, and adaptations for different stage layouts. See the IES listing for ANSI/IES RP-41-20 for the scope of that professional reference.
How are theatre lights positioned?
Designers work with the venue’s available positions rather than assuming one universal arrangement. They consider what the audience needs to see, the effect the light should create, and how far each fixture is from the acting area. Beam spread and throw distance affect coverage: at a longer distance, a beam may cover a different area, so fixture choice and focus have to suit the actual space.

EdTA’s example shows how differently sized beams can cover separate acting areas, with narrower beams used for farther throws and overlapping coverage helping avoid dark gaps. It is an illustration, not a set of dimensions or placements to copy into every theatre. A lighting plot records fixture placement; a section drawing can show beam angles, possible obstructions, and spill toward the audience. Together, these documents help the team understand not only where equipment goes but what its light is expected to reach.
How does a lighting design get from idea to performance?
- Start with the production and venue. Identify what the audience must see, what environment the light should create, and what it should communicate. Check the space and its available hanging positions.
- Choose fixtures for the job. Match the instrument and its beam to the target area, throw distance, desired coverage, and available control. No single fixture family is best for every theatre.
- Document the design. Use a lighting plot to communicate equipment placement and supporting drawings, such as sections, to clarify beam direction and potential obstructions.
- Prepare and control the system. The electrics team hangs, focuses, connects, and controls the fixtures using the venue’s system. Channels, dimmers, and the lighting board help organize and run the design.
- Run cues during the performance. The board triggers changes in levels and lighting looks at the appropriate moments in the show.
The exact workflow and equipment depend on the production and venue. ANSI/IES RP-41-20 addresses professional system design, while the BYU basic stage-lighting unit describes topics beginners study, including instruments, light qualities and functions, basic electricity and circuitry, hanging and focusing, channels and dimmers, and operating a light board.

What should beginners learn first?
A useful introduction connects what light does to how the system works. BYU’s beginner unit pairs equipment and instrument knowledge with light qualities and functions, basic electricity and circuitry, hanging and focusing, channels and dimmers, and board operation. This helps a learner understand how design choices become cues that can be run in a performance.
A course outline is not a substitute for venue-specific safety training. Follow the theatre’s procedures and instruction for electrical work, rigging, and handling equipment; do not treat a beginner overview as authorization to perform those tasks independently.

For a practical introduction aimed at students, technicians, and designers, Routledge describes the eighth edition of Designing with Light: An Introduction to Stage Lighting as covering fixtures, lamps, cabling, dimmers, control boards, LED tape, and electrical theory. Routledge’s book listing identifies the edition and its subject coverage.
For professional reference, the Illuminating Engineering Society’s ANSI/IES RP-41-20 is a recommended practice published in 2020. It addresses lighting for theatres and worship spaces, including equipment selection and layout, controls, and different stage configurations; it is not a universal inventory mandate.
